It seems like the FW series is getting old and needs a revamp. I can't believe Sony doesn't at least update it with DDR3 and a LED screen.

So, any rumors of a FW update or revamp? :D

Um. The FW is only 6 months old or so. It's just started it's third refresh. Patience. I'm sure Sony's hard at work on something, but really it'd be a bit early to really refresh the FW series just yet.

As long as they do so once the cost of these components is low enough to maintain or lessen the current price points.

    Cheers,

It's not and with the economy in the can, I would think sony first wants to move the current FWs rather than any new models out

Either way, Sony can update the FW internals but the design doesn't feel outdated at all and is still miles nicer looking than anything HP, Dell, or any other company has to offer. I actually don't want them to change the design. Even my next laptop (whenever it may be), I would still get another FW.

I agree on the exterior, but the hinge barrels have to go, or perhaps sony could strengthen them up a bit :D

Ascariss was probably referring to the imperfect alignment problem of the hinges on certain FWs, not complaining about their actual design.

The FW refresh depends on when Intel will release Nehalem. With all this economic problems and shrinking profits I don't really see SONY hurrying to replace a still good and competitive line of laptops.

They'll probably throw in the new 4xxx ATI chip later this year and then just wait for Nehalem. DDR3 bump in performance is not that amazing right now and the dual lamp Sharp display is good enough to survive untouched a little longer, even without LEDs.

Why wouldn't they just throw in DDR3 though, even if it's not that much faster.

Maybe they wouldn't have to release a new design but at least release some configuration options for DDR3 and LED.

Also, I wish they would offer inside colors (not just lid) like titanium and black (that's on the AW series).

Because of these things, I am forced to buy a Dell XPS 16.

I think he was talking in terms of strength because it really feels like they're the laptop's weak parts. I mean, yes they look good but it feels like they're gonna fall off any time, especially the one on the left side. The other one where the light is is solid but the other one is slightly crooked and not very sturdy.

FW definitely needs an LED option on the 1080p screen. I was in the market for an FW or DEll 1640 with 1080p RGBLED screen.

I went with the 1640 because of the screen.. i ended up cancelling the order because it was delayed too long. So now im waiting till windows7 becomes oem in the 2nd half of 2009. FW better be LED at that time!!!

The dual lamp screen FW doesn't really need LED to be on par with the Dell RGB LED. Plus that the Dell has super reflective glass coating in front of the display making it a pain to look at in bright places. LED is quite over rated IMO, but maybe that's just me.

Forced to buy an XPS16... DDR3 doesn't bring anything truly relevant to the table while the dual lamp screen of the FW might surprise you. Go to a brick and mortar store and take a look at both the FW and the XPS16 before making your mind.

Does the FW275 (Canadian model) have the dual lamp as well (i know it has the 1080p)? Ive seen the FW285 in stores, and it does look great, better than average. How does it compare to the LCD on the TZ/TT or (Z (1600x900) series.

I just don't want a florescent tube in my screen (for certain reasons), especially when there are other options out there such as SXPS 16 that have everything I want. To me, the glossy issue is minor.

Well, if the glossy issue is minor and you decided already then go 4 it. The glossy issue is not standard fare. The screen itself is glossy and on top of that they added a mirror like glass protective layer, so the display is double glossy.

Any FW with the 1080p/full HD screen has the dual lamp display.
