[] It arrived yesterday, what a beautiful notebook! I am very brand new to notebooks, only other one I've used is a tiny Averatec 12.1".
A couple of questions for the "elders" here... I notice that the fans run constantly, is this normal on these bigger notebooks? And is that gonna be a problem down the line, or actually prevent problems down the line?
And.. I can get used to the constant fan noise, but.. there is an occasional tinny rattle sound in there too.... at times it *is* annoying... I spose because I never heard it on my tiny notebook... should I just get used to it, or is it not normal to hear any little rattling sounds?
The Gigapocket stuff... absolutely NO printed material at all about what this is or how to use it... Went scouring the Net and found a link to it, a 64 page PDF file that I will print and read... but going in totally blind, I was at a loss for what to do with all this Gigapocket TV stuff with no manual... like... what ELSE do I need to go buy for this to work?
Otherwise... so far.. the keyboard feels *great* and very natural, not flimsy. Love the touchpad once I got used to it. The screen... the shiny glare will take some getting used to after all my other PCs having the anti-glare surface. But otherwise it is just beautiful, no complaints. Haven't viewed any DVDs on it yet. The weight doesn't bother me... the tradeoff is worth it, look at this awesome thing and its capabilites! To be able to take something like this with me somewhere... so happy!!! Low battery life? Sure, more is always better, but for me personally that is not an issue. Yet lol
There goes that rattling again... sounds kind of like little insects inside there rolling little tiny metal balls around... please tell me this is normal and I didn't get a "lemon"... I just *can't* go down that road... nooooooooo lol lol
Thanks for any feedback, I am so excited about this computer, but know so little really, and love to hear from those who know and love their Sony notebooks...

I've never owned a sony, but my fans in both desktop, and laptop do not rattle. When one did, it was broken so your fan may have gotten damaged in shipping or something.

Hi Quikster...no, the fans sound fine and I was just wondering if they were supposed to run constantly, because there is constant fan noise on mine. About the little rattle sounds, they are not constant, but occasional and are seperate from the fan noises completly... maybe it is "computer working" noises and I hear it so well because this is a powerful unit and being so close to the workings of it, am bound to hear it working?? I have no idea... lol

Yeah...basically what Slat said. The fan should run all of the time, but vary in speed according to your processor speed. The 'rattling' you hear may very well be your hard drive. I have a Vaio NV190 and I had to replace the drive (slammed the laptop shut...not good for these no micro drives...wimps). I ended up with a Toshiba 60gig (formerly IBM Travelstar) and noticed that it occasionaly made almost a popping sound when the drive was accessed. I've sinced noticed this same sound in my Kingston PC-Card drive and in the hard drive of the v505 I recently purchased. You should go ahead and call Sony and confirm the noise. I have a feeling it is just the hard drive since it's not constant. It can be annoying though, but eventually you tune it out.

The hard drive should not be doing that though. The two laptops I have had never made a sound like that from a properly working hard drive, nor do any of the other computer science students' laptops usually the biggest problem is fan noise.

Thanks for your thoughts... this thing is going back. I haven't used it at all... afraid to..LOL... And just now decided that Gigapocket might be nice... so... after downloading the manual, and finally figuring out that *surely* I *gotta* need something other than this rediculously short cord they included... and having no idea what... and after a couple hours of *that* frustration (why do I need a college education in Setting Up GigaPocket?? to use it?? lol)... I decided to turn on the computer to see if the rattling was gone. Nope. And I can fine tune the description for ya... sounds like little burning wires popping and cracking inside the thing. The fan is actually quiet. But this rattling popping sound... nope, sadly, I am shipping it back tomorrow.
And, trying to get a live person on the Sony phone numbers is a nightmare. And when trying to get a Return Authorization #, once I *did* make it to a live person, which is required, they passed me on to other phone numbers with other menus and on and on... as time slowly ticks by... lol
Scared away from Sony, going back to Averatec... for a while...

Slat you are so right! I have heard and read about every brand having at least one "lemon" once in a while... Guess I just got the disappointment blues, after salivating so much waiting for the Sony to arrive... and when it does, it makes that rattling/snapping/popping sound... LOL.. Still love Sony... got their cameras and love them.. won't totally write off their pc's... just gonna sit back a bit before I dive back in... and keep reading, and learning... [

OH YEAH, PS... it came with only a TRIAL version of Office 2003, darn it!! Are the "good ol days" gone? I remember when I got my first pc... an IBM Aptiva... maybe 5 years ago, so its a relic now... lol... But... it came with full versions of ViaVoice, Lotus (the whole chimichanga of lotus apps), and lots of other lesser but wonderful little goodies... kinda suprised that Sony skimps on the software. Not complaining, just whining LOL LOL

Heh... ok... after hours and hours of more reading, hopefully learning, I dove back in and came home with a Sony V505EX. I love this little thing!
But... it has the same annoying rattling/popping sound as the GRT270 that I just spent lotsa bucks on to send back. I will take the advice here and call Sony to ask if this sound as "normal"... it only does it when the HD is working... but gee why is it so noisy? I didn't hear a *thing* in the store on the demo I played with. But that was probably cause this particular noise was lost among all other sounds nearby (typical computer store sounds). Well... if you guys have this HD sound, and you can tune it out, then I will give it a good go, altho I *am* sensitive to annoying noises... lol! My cheap little Averatec couldn't be heard at all. The fan in this little Sony is barely audible. And, after a few hours of constant use now, it is only mildly warm. [] Can't find a volume control anywhere... must not be one? But that's ok. Do love this little pc, hope it turns out to be ok... Thanks everyone for posting your thoughts and advice!
In love again [],
