Thanks for the link.
It looks like the base model for a series which is to replace the SR series.
Improvements I noticed:
- The core i3 330m
- the arrandale graphics (of course)
- Internal 3G modem
- Gigabyte lan
- HDMI
- 1366 * 768 resolution (instead of 1280 * 800)
Hopefully more powerful CPU options will be made available, as well as the option of a discreet, switchable, GPU.
The resolution change also gives some small hope this screen will be better than used in the SR series. If it is anti-glare, the S series could become a nice option to consider. -

Oooooooops.
-
Thanks for finding the picture SpaceCowboy, I've added it to the first post.
-
So the S series looks like the successor to the SR series. The higher res screen is gonna be much appreciated. Hopefully they'll offer the ATI 5000 series (probably 5570) and the i5 chip for CTO in the US market. Throw in the antiglare screen like they offer for the Z series and I'll be sold.

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
It looks just as thick as the SR? Sony couldn't make it a little thinner?
-
^It might even be a little thicker at the front than the SR series.
-
Is this a new Z??

GT330 in Z... is that a mistake?
-
Made new thread guys, let's don't make confusion!
-
-
Except wouldn't battery life take a nice hit (ok it's switchable but still) and the laptop would get really warm?
-
It could be a mistake too. It doesn't make much sense in a Z.
-
The new S isn't exactly eye candy is it...
-
The picture isn't very clear but it will be very similar to the current SR.
-
Man I am a bit jealous now. Can't wait to see what the real TT update brings out.
-
looks like a cross btw. a cw and bz
-
this isnt a mistake, you guys are getting everything confused
if anyone knows there is already a S series but its the VGN-Sxx
the current Z series is the VGN-Zxx these new models are all VPC-Z/S/Y
hope this clears any confusions -
-
yupp i guess they cant be bothered to think of new Letters so they just started over like a cycle
but with a different grouping name im guessing..............this is gonna be very confusing when searching for things online 0_o ahhh lets see what happens
i guess CW started the revolution -
I could be interested in this. I prefer the top end Sony line but it makes no sense for me to get a 13.1 laptop when i already own a TT and i will be keeping that.
The weight is a little high at 4.4lbs. It is .5 heavier than my SZ. I would be tempted by a white one.
Hopefully the display is good and this laptop has a decent battery at least 58whr.
I wait to see also how good this next gen hardware is battery life wise.
Overall this looks thinner than the SR.
It is good that Sony included the 3G modem. I have no need for dedicated graphics.
I am waiting to see what other companies will bring out as well. -
-
-
I take it that was with a Pxxxx CPU?

New S Series (in Europe) -
Purchased a SR59VG/H this week but am going to return it back and instead will buy the new S once it's available in the UK, apparently by the end of the month.
It seems the only downside with the S series lies with the graphics as it's apparently a step back from the ATI chip from the SR. -
VAIO S is now available on Sonystyle european stores!
- Processors: i5 520M, i5 540M or i7 620M
- Colors: Black, White, Pink, Green and Silver
- HD: 320GB 5400 or 7200rpm, 500GB 5400 or 7200rpm, 640GB 5400rpm, 128GB SSD
- Memory: 2, 4 or 6GB DDR3
- Graphics: Intel HD or NVIDIA 310M
- Optical Drive: DVD or BluRay (insane 600€ option!)
- Other: Optional WWAN, 16:9 1366x768 screen. -
-
I'd rather see that ATI 4570...
-
The config options are very good and prices are decent also. You can get this model in black with a backlit keyboard. The other colours though don't come with a backlit keyboard. The higher end model also comes with a bluray drive.
I wish that the lower end model had this as an option. I have no need for dedicated graphics but you cannot get this as an option on the higher end model.
I love the colour choices.

I don't get it, this seems to have the same specs and options as the Z. This may confuser users more. At least the previous SR had a better ati gpu vs the intel gpu on the Z.
-
I specced out an SR a while back and it came with the T9900 Core2 duo CPU (3.06GHz), 8GB DDR2-800 RAM, Blu-ray burner, Windows 7 professional 64-bit, 512MB graphics card, 500GB 7200rpm HDD (SSD was optional but I did not choose it) etc., which was very close to what a Z-series could be specced out as.
I think this time around, the SR will continue to have hard-drive options, while the Z is moving to an exclusively SSD arrangement. -
Well the SR also had a glossy screen, while the Z had a matte screen. I the S may now cannibalize some sales from the Z now as the gpu is the same, but I could be wrong.
-
If anything it should stop the cannibalization, by making the Z the equal of the S.
-
I guess, but I knew some people who wanted the Z, because it had an nvidia gpu, vs the ati. I take it this doesn't have a switchable gpu?
-
I am a Z11VN owner but I happen not to appreciate the lack of overall solidity with the laptop and I've had quite a few issues with the screen either getting scratched or showing signs of bruise marks because the lid is too flexible.
I liked it's performance/weight ratio but I'd rather have a 500g heavier laptop that is way more durable. -
I couldn't find it, but is the S no longer glossy? Because that is also a big difference between the Z and S. -
If anyone's interested to buy a S series laptop in the UK, go to following link, https://shop.sonystyle-europe.com/, and then select "UK Home (VAIO)".
My order is awaiting payment confirmation and if Sony's right, 3 to 4 weeks before shipping, I should have my laptop by the end of this month. Fingers crossed. -
When setting every option to the minimum for both, the only differences are the blu-ray drive and the graphics. And a price difference of 560 euro. The better graphics are a 70 euro upgrade for the cheaper model, leaving the blu-ray upgrade to cost you a hefty 490 euro... They are still expensive, but that expensive?
So, am I perhaps missing something here? -
My CTO S will apparently be built between 12/01 and 18/01.
Fingers crossed. -
But is the screen on the new S-series matte?
-
I would consider that highly unlikely.
