My wife just got her new SVS13 today. So far it seems nice, but as others have said, the display is barely adequate. The first thing I did was install an extra 4GB of RAM (total cost: $20). This worked fine.

We always run our laptops with a bios password so I got into the bios somehow and set up the admin (?) and user passwords..no problem. However, it does not seem to ask for the password upon bootup at all. Worse yet, I can no longer even get to the bios anymore. Either I am pressing the wrong key (F2), or it simply does not work. Instead of getting me into the bios, it dumps me into a boot manager that only has the options of checking memory or running Win7.

Has anyone else tried this? The bios version is R0142C5 and is the latest (and only.) Am I doing something wrong?

And why doesn't Sony support passwords for the HDD? We used this with all of our Dell laptops. I know I can use bitlocker once I install Ultimate, but the HDD password was a nice quick & dirty security feature.

As a side note, we really were thinking about the Z series since it is lighter and apparently has a much better display, but my wife really wanted a DVD player and the Z was double the price for what we wanted.

Apparently you have to hold down F2 whilst pressing the power button.

If you get the Z, forget about the DOC, and just go buy a 30 dollar dvd USB drive.

Thanks Voyanger, that did the trick. I have see a lot of bioses (?) in my time, but have never seen this type of behavior before.

Sony does not want you to fiddle around in the bios, in fact they locked most things out, I think the most you can do is time, date and boot order.

I too have seen a lot of bioses too, most of the time you just need to spam del, f2, f10.

Another way to get to the BIOS is to choose advanced settings in Vaio Care recovery and then you can choose reboot to BIOS while you are in Windows.
