Have had my SZ110 for less than 2 weeks. Four days ago, the second USB port quit working. I can plug anything into it, reboot, etc and it just plain is unresponsive. This morning my mouse plugged into port one quit working (MS Optical). The SZ tells me that the USB device is "not recognized" but it works in both a Vaoi desktop and my Dell Latitude 610. I've went into hardware manager, disabled the USB hub and re-enabled it...no good. USB ports just brain-dead.

Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas on other things I can try before I backup all my files and return this to Best Buy? God help me....they are pretty much clueless up there and I just know this thing will end up being sent back for repairs to Sony.

You might try uninstalling the usb controllers, reboot, and install the drivers again. Sounds like the ports may have gone south on you though. I know when I plug in a powered hub, with my GPS connected to it, I get an over-current message bubble at the system tray. Everything works fine, I just get that message when I first plug in.

It's definitely a loose connection or a short. If I insert the mouse into the first port and lift upwards gently, the light on the mouse fires up and the system recognizes the USB mouse. If I let go, it goes dead again. No amount of lifting or slight pressure on the second port seems to work.

Interestingly, I had no issues with either port until the first time I used that little memory card adapter right above the second port. I suspect everything is so crammed into that space that just merely inserting the card caused an issue.

Well no fixing this on my own....SIGH....guess I get to go get a new system from Best Buy. And just after I finished finally getting all my files/progs xferred to the new SZ.

Returned my SZ110 and exchanged it for a new one at Best Buy today. While there, one of the Geek Squad guys came over and tested the USB ports and said to his buddy "3rd SZ returned with bad USB ports," and then told me they'd had a few come back this way already. He also claimed Sony is aware of the problem and that it's linked to a flimsy connector on the motherboard.

    Let's hope I don't have this problem a second time running..... :(

Well, I do use my USB ports a lot, so I'm sure I'll have a problem if I have a bad one...

I have got the same similar problem on my R505GL after two years of usage. Too bad I noticed two days after the warranty expired. It has been like that since then.

No, in this case, the ports were dead....had nothing to do with Windows. Read the symptoms again.....the USB mouse and other USB devices would work FINE if I maintained a constant upwards pressure on the USB plug when it was connected. Release the pressure and the device would cease functioning. Clearly a manufacturing defect of some kind.

I've bought a USB hub until I can get the port replicator. I ordered the replicator but nobody seems to have them actually in stock and I had to go to the Sony site to do so. It doesn't even give me a ship date at this time.
