My SZ640 just came in and I have a few questions:

    1. I bought 2 sticks of 2gb ram thinking that I can max this to 4gb (which is listed in the specs as the max), but I heard that only 64 bit OS can use it. Can I use 4gb on this machine? Would it hurt it to install the 4, even if it will only utilize 3?

    2. Is it worth it to do a clean install w/ portableone's bloatware-free system disks? Any problems other than the missing battery software?

    3. If I try to do a manual bloatware removal, is there comprehensive list somewhere that can help?

    Thanks,

    John

    to answer your question

1 no it will not hurt your machine if you install 4 gigs of ram windows vista 32bit will only recognize 3.5 since its not capable of using all 4 gigs. The only way you can use all 4 gigs is if you install a 64 bit os like Vista 64

2 Sony is notorious for adding bloat ware to their machine that lags the whole system. I have had 4 VAIOS and did a clean install on all of them and the performance difference is amazing

3 You can manual try to remove it but it wont be as good as doing a clean install because of the registry changes the programs makes its always better to do a clean install.
There is no list but the vital programs are
    Sony Event Services
    Sony Shared Library
    Wireless Switching Utility
    Sony Vaio Power Management
    Sony Notebook Control Utilities
VAIO Camera Capture Utility for your webcam

Those are just some off the top of my head the rest is bloatware
