I've just visited the Sony Vaio website (UK) and it seems the new FZ's are up for pre-order. I'm hoping to get my 3 day old toshiba returned so I can get one of these FZ's. I wasn't too keen on the first FZ's however these new ones in the UK seem have very good spec.
However, which would you advise me getting?

Looking are the specs, the S has a t7500 compared to the M's t7250 (I think thats a new santa rosa processor, same as t7300 but with a 2mb L2 cache). The other advantage is that the S has an 8600GS compared to the M's 8400GT, both with 256 dedicated memory.
So basically, the S costs £100 over the M so is it worth paying that extra? Is the 8600GS quite a bit better than the 8400GT?
Thanks, Jam.

I would fill out an FAQ.

All I want to know, whether in the laptop world, is a t7500 and an 8600GS over a t7250 and an 8400GT worth an extra £100. Also, is the 8600GS quite a bit better than the 8400GT - I've heard varied reviews.
Pending that I return my toshiba, I'll definetly be ordering either of the Sony's - I'm not interested in other laptops, (E.G Vostro 1500, Asus F3sv, Acer 5920 etc),
Thanks, Jam. -
You are getting mixed report about 8600GS vs 8400GT because many 8600GS come underclocked to Nvidia's specification, making them slower than FZ's 8400GT (which is clocked to Nv specification). Very few laptops have 8600GS with Nv reference clockspeed, but when they do, it should be faster than 8400GT by 20 to 25%. Since all current gen Sony laptop GPUs are clocked at Nv reference speed, new FZ may have "proper" 8600GS, but I cannot say for certain. However, combined with increased CPU speed, I think it worth the extra.
And if it has proper 8600GS, new FZ "S" seems to be the killer 15.4inch laptop.

Ah I see. I'll probably try are get the S then. The one higher, the Z, seems to have all the same specs but with a read and write blu ray drive!! Thats an ultimate future proof machine with the capaiblities to write to blu ray as well. However, thats out of my price range - £1200 meaning an extra £200 just for a blu ray drive that can write. In a couple of months time external writable blu ray drivers should be released and within a year prices will be relatively low I would of thought.

I am eyeing the Sony's FZ as well. And this thread has helped me to consider FZ21S... Sony Vaio's cost is slightly higher in its own site (sonystyle.co.uk)compared to others such as dabs.com etc...
Any suggestions on where to look for the best deal on Sony Vaios in UK... -
I'm not currently sure tbh. The new FZ21's have yet to come out and the only place where you can pre-order it is via the sonystyle website. I assume the first place that will get the new FZ's will be SonyCenter - I'll probably be getting it from there even if it is £100 more as I've had a hard time plus a lot of money to send back my Toshiba to an internet shop.

I just bought the FZ180E yesterday which has the 8400M GT video card and blueray player and blueray recorder too, I am going to use it mainly to watch blueray movies that's why I chose this one. I may try running a game or two now that I changed the hard drive to 160Gig 5400 rpm drive just to see how it runs games but gaming was not my reason to purchase this at all, I am very happy with it so far.
