I use my notebook on my lap so coolness is needed. Does the new Sony S run hot?

Depends on what you do with it. If your gaming it will get pretty hot from what i've heard. But just surfing you wont really notice it.

And 2nd: Check the S series (SB/SA Owner Topic).

From what people have posted, 90 degrees from gaming.

Hopefully, that is 90 degrees Fahrenheit...

    Any reports on fan noise?

    Fahrenheit

And by all accounts, the fan noise is fairly noticible. Depends on what you're used to though.

    Fahrenheit

and every sony gives a very audible fan noise when under load. however when doing light things like watching movies, surfing the web, you wont notice it.

One thing we fairly agree its up to the user, how it can or cant tolerate the fan.

90 F seems too low and 90 C seems too high. You could cook a grilled cheese sandwich on 90 C.

My current Asus has a very quiet fan and runs cool. Okay, lukewarm. Just don't want a notebook that burns my legs or damages my eardrums. :)

It's actually Celsius... no one measures computer temps by Fahrenheit... Desktops normally (if you build it correctly) at around ~50-60C at full load... after gaming on my Z, I see temps of 94C GPU and if i let my CPU turboboost, 100C on CPU, otherwise 93C.

If a desktop runs at 50-60C with all their fans and open space laptops will have to run much warmer. I see idle temps at around 45C for CPU on my Z with integrated graphics, SB architecture has the processor stepping so it might be lower, but if on a desktop you have 45C idle, you better check your airflow.

But then again this doesn't always translate to how hot your lap gets. The MBP hits that high as well... except it doesn't manage heat that well, it's aluminum... turning the case into a secondary heatsink and your lap into a tertiary heatsink (same for some of the new all-aluminum HPs). The Z, IMO has good heat management, dispersing heat out the vents as opposed to letting it build up on the chassis.

Go to the owner's thread if you're really interested about heat of the SB

Thanks. What's the difference between the SB, SA, etc?

SB is the lower, cheaper model. Weighs more, less pixel dense screen.

SA is the bigger better brother, Carbon Fiber chassis, weighs less, more pixel dense screen

SC/SD i think are just regional names for the SB. In the US, the SC actually is a slight variant of the SB (and is now also a new Best Buy exclusive).

In short, it's SB/SC/SD vs. SA => lower end vs higher end.

Since most of vents of the SB are located at the bottom (with one vent just under the screen), you might get irritated by the heat if you use the laptop on your lap most of the time. The computer does get warm on moderately demanding tasks (e.g. Google Earth), but if you stay on the HD Graphics then it should be fine.

Hummm thought it was the palmrest or the case! Imagine a pc that gets a 90c palmrest!

So yes its indeed 90c when gaming. And btw some people that call themselves american actually measure anything with that archaic fahrenheit scale, including pc temps, if you dont do it, it wont mean that every does.

80-85 degrees (celcius) on both CPU and GPU. laptop runs pretty decent at those temperatures. warm, but not warm enough that it will get your palms sweaty.

and for those who game, the area that gets warm is the lower right corner of the laptop, the left palm rest stays comfortable.
