Pracola, the date only changes to the 23rd if you pick the Wireless WAN. Try this - go back up to Sony's Site and configure a system as you want it but DO NOT choose the Wireless WAN. Note that the date still shows the 12th. Now add the Wireless WAN and you will instantly see the date change to the 23rd.

I had 3 Z1s broken display with no abuse! Sony does not favor durability at all for that you have to go to thinkpad.

BTW one thing Sony favor is overpraicing. You can get the same machine from other brands for 1k less. I'm wondering when those nice fragile 1080p Z2 screens start to crack and sony ask for 1k to replace it. Z1s where 500usd, 1366x1024

You know. One thing I struggle with is people making generalization about Sony and/or Apple being overpriced. I did a comparison of the high end Z21 w/i7 2620M processor, 8 gb memory, 256 GB SATA drive, etc.. against a similarly spec'd (or at least as close as possible) Lenovo X1, Toshiba Portege R830, Apple Macbook Pro 13", and a Dell Vostro 3350, all considered high end portable 13" business machines, and the price ranged from $2363 (the macbook pro) to $2863 (the lenovo X1). So I don't know why people are always saying things about certain brand, when really, when you actually compare apples to apples, you see that there really isn't an overprice. It's sorda like saying BMW are overpriced when you're comparing it to a Kia...

Anyways, I may be wrong, or I may just be a fanboy, but either way do your homework and comparison first. And if the Sony ends up being overpriced, then it's probably over spec'd for what you need.

And how much for the sony Z in this config? 4k at least ?Sony is overpriced. If you go to parts then.......

Name me one that has a 500usd replacement screen.

By the way this new Z, a dock that does not dock? If I want a desktop I whould buy an desktop! Sony should put the dock part int the sheet with the battery. And those fans under it? Is this a laptop? Oh forgot it's a desktop.

I had an Z1 a P and still have an X, my last Sony for shure. X at least did not get me any problems yet. Iwent to lenovo to replace the Z1.

Well, I'm not going to doubt what you saw, but the reviews I have read of the VAIO Z describe the screen as either being matte or anti-reflective/glare. It's certainly a premium display as regards its quality, but knowing Sony, I'm sure they aren't going to saddle their new Z with a glossy display.

I certainly hope it retains the trademark matte screen of past Zs. That's one of the most alluring aspects of the series.

I believe you need 700 posts (as ComputerCowboy said). Mine shows up, and I don't recall seeing it there last time I was there.

I think he just gets really lucky all the time/ puts a ton of software on it to garner more money. The nice thing about college (or some of them at least) is that you can get free software for your computer (or at a big discount).

Often times dumb college people buy his Macs. One time someone offered him $100 more than his Craigslist asking price for his computer. I just don't get how he gets so lucky. He would've gotten the Z2 had it not been for the terrible resale value. Instead he got the new Air.

We're kind of on opposite ends when we get computer hardware. I upgrade every few cycles and take a big resale hit (or hand it down) but get premium hardware. He gets the base model every time there's a new Apple cycle for the Pro and Air and keeps flip flopping when the new one comes out. This way resale is still high (since that computer line, eg Air or Pro is still the newest model).

"... the same machine from other brands..." just name ONE which is on par with the Z1/Z2. It's just not there. (formfactor + high res screen)

fragile screen on the Z2? It's supposed to be very sturdy according to some insiders.
Even sturdier than the Z1 screen. I once saw a vid where a guy grabbed a fully opened Z1 just at the top of the screen, obviously there was a huge flex, but no harm done.

Note: PC Mark Vantage scores are heavily weighted towards SSDs, which is why MBA scores close to Z2, though the former has ulv cpus and Z2 has SV. What kind of surprises me is how well the MBA HD3000 does in 3d Mark 06 when that test should be largely function of the clock speed of the cpu. I don't get why the MBA nearly equals the Z21 in that.

Doesn't matter. MBA has crappy screen and is for chumps. Personally, I'm keeping my Z1, upping it to 512GB (from 384) and getting a Vidock. Imitation is the highest form of flattery Computer Cowboy. :D (Btw, how do you manage with only 128GB SSD?)

How did you swing the 18% discount? If I could get 18% off, I'd jump on the 512GB as well.

I suppose that's probably a Europe thing though, sounds like 5% is the top discount in the US.

Anyone has found information on these items:

    - real noise in idle (and load if possible), detailed impression or measured dBs

    - how well does linux works on it (boot a ubuntu live cd for example)

    Thanks

Rock on! you'll love the setup

If you don't keep any movies or music on the system drive it is not so hard.
I have over 10TB of storage between my file server and various USB drives.

SSD upgrade is the next thing on my list. I have plans to squeeze ~1TB of SSD in there (three drives)

The two first started with a black dot in it tha grows throught the weeks. The thrid one just cracked when opening. The fact is the lid alow the screen to bend too much. Carbon fiber is not rigid enought.

In the videos posted some pages ago here you can see the screen bend in Z2 when the guy just open the lid, exactly as Z1.

I am concerned about the noise as well, more importantly, how is it compared to Z1.

And is the noise mainly from the PMD or the main unit when under load?

Reviews have generally stated that under normal conditions its silent. Under load it can get quite loud, but a japanese site that did decibel mesurements showed that it was still quieter than the z1 under load.

If Sony stays Sony, the Z2 should not have a major problem with Linux. With my 2 Zs, the one major issue I've had running Linux is getting it to recognize the Nvidia graphic cards - GT330M and 9300M. I'm hoping the same stays with the Z2 as I'm going to get rid of Windows the moment I get my paws on it.

People should also complain, negative experiences are important as well. They may help others to make a decision about what to buy.

I'm not saying that in this particular case the negative comments were super constructive, but I hate this attitude, that if someone says something bad about e.g. the Z then someone else comes and tells him to stop criticizing and to go away.

Z1 has a very irritating whine even in low usage situations.

If the Z2 has a similar whine, or really any audible noise in a web browsing/word processing situation I will not be buying it.

Under a high usage situation, where reviews have mentioned loud fan noise, I don't have an issue (since I am normally wearing headphones then anyways).

But saying that you've had 3 screens die, when none of the other Z1 users here has had that particular problem even once, is more likely indicative of that user mistreating the laptop than of the poor build quality or durability of the laptop. Then the user went on to bash Sony on price as well, which is not particularly useful as we all know the price of the Z and can make our own decision on the value for the money.

In this instance, it's hardly what I would call a legitimate criticism. Legitimate criticisms, should be and, I think, generally are welcomed.

That's why Sony included a noise canceling headset ;) I have a real time frequency analyzer and will take some measurements when I get my Z21. I would do it at a Sony Style store, but apparently there aren't any Sony Style store in the Midwest...

The Z2 alone might be better for Linux, I'm not so sure about the Z2 + PMD though, that could be even more problematic than the switchable graphics from the first two generations.

I agree, I'd really like to know how this one dude got three bad screens. Seems more to me like there was some damage. I have had a lot of VAIOs and a lot of them have had fragile screens. I've only ever had one bad one though. I had a UX390N where the screen died the first day I had it.

What I am saying is that lots of people have the Z1 and very few have issues with the screen, I think he must be doing something to damage them.

I have the VAIO BMS-15, Razer Orochi, and Microsoft Bluetooth Presenter Mouse 8000. I have found that the Razor and the Presenter interfere with the A2DP audio, the VAIO mouse does not. The VAIO mouse is pretty boring though. The Razor has the best feel, and the Presenter has the most features, play, pause, skip, laser pointer. The Presenter also eats batteries like its job.

In my opinion the BMS-10 sucks. It stutters every 1 or 2 minutes and sometimes goes unresponsive for 15-30 seconds. I've tried out the bluetooth driver called Generic Bluetooth Adapter or something like that suggested by ComputerCowboy and it didn't help. This happens in the stock driver/newest drivers from broadcom too.
