"opened completely"? - If I look at the picture to me it looks like as if those stoppers hit the table if the lid is opened somewhat around 100°. I hope that's not the max. angle the lid can be opened.

 

Oh oh I know! Maybe when the lid is fully open it'll lift up the bottom of the chassis hence improving airflow!

if that picture of the back of a laptop is really the z, then i must say that it looks horrible so far

 

The ports on the visible side seem to be squeezed together, it suggests there's an ODD in the remaining space. There's something there, words or label, in that space which I can't quite make out...

I agree, this new Z design doesn't differentiate itself from an X Series or the new SA/SB/SC Series. Those rubber guards will eventually come off and discolor. I do, however, like that Hybrid Tablet/Notebook. Sony designed a similar desktop to that way back - it was the W Series I believe. It was cool. I actually had one. But at 9" way too small, if only it were 13.1, 13.3, then I would consider it.

It looks like the X and has that aluminum element. Chassis is probably mostly carbon fiber. From the teaser pic, IMO, it looks fairly plain. I think the organic curve and barrel on the Z with the pointy end at the aluminum palmrest is much more interesting.

 

IIRC Beaups said that the new Z will be 13.1" as well. Maybe they misinterpreted the Japanese article where it was mentioned, that the design resembles that of the new 13.3" S series.

 

Guys, look at this better quality image, you can see that there is quite a large gap between the edge of the keyboard and the edge of the computer.

So either the display is larger than 13.1/13.3 or the bezel is quite large like on the S series...

 

I'm not sure that follows as most notebooks don't have a direct correlation between the bezel size and the space between the keyboard edge and the notebook's edge.

 

Ok then, another possible deduction is that the keyboard is smaller/more compact than that on the current Z or even the S series..

To me, that looks like a definite winner for Sony. It seems like Sony is coming up with better & better designs each year. I'm sure this upcoming new VAIO Z series will sell like hotcakes & even sell better than all the previous Z iterations. Watch out, Samsung 9 & MBA, here comes the new VAIO Z series.

 

I was actually hoping for a better design, the white stripe horrible idea. the screen looks thick, I would have hoped with such a high end notebook, the screen would not be as thick.

No worries. You can always pick up a VAIO SA notebook when it is released or grab the current VPC-Z notebook while you can still find it. Good luck.

 

I would disagree. This is a sort of compilation of X and SB. While the overall geometric design gives us some reason to say about plagiarism (hello, Dell). We got an eclectic degradation. Aesthetically, Lenovo X1 wins definitely more points. Sadly.

 

the SA is just the SB with better screen and a higher price, and I have written the SB off already due to the small resolution, thick bezel and the vent being in the rear, so no new sony laptop for me for now.

I seriously hope the FW was not my first and last vaio

 

I'm just waiting for details on the specs and performance. Almost anything will be a step up aesthetics-wise from my T61p

I really can't get over the weird silver strip with two bumps on the back and the two kinked lines on the top cover. Need pictures from other angles...

 

^^Silver elements are very common on 2011 sony products, like the all-in-one L, the new tablet, this one as well.

Now Sony, show me that gorilla glass in the front and you have +1 customer already.

BTW, would beaups be willing to confirm or not confirm that this is the actual "new" Z?

The rear part and the lines on the lid bother me as well. Except that for me the metal strip at the back would be ok if the 2 plastic/rubber things weren't there. They look very odd.

 

That resolves the issue. Unlike the new Z in which nothing seems resolved right now. It's not even clear that those new picture are of the Z2.

Given the screen size, that may not be the new Z. Besides, I don't see where the ODD would attach.

 

Agreed. It looks cheap and void of any design consideration.

I will have to give up on a backlit keyboard, but currently Sony is out of the running. I will probably be choosing either a Lenovo X220 or X1...

yeah... I hope not... and I agree with whoever said the X1 looks better... according to the pics they might have the same screen thickness... so... yeah

 

I had understood that the ODD attaches by cable through the Thunderbolt port. I don't think there was an indication that it would somehow latch to the laptop. Am I misunderstanding?

Also, regarding the design and fragility topics, I remember Beaups saying that the Z2 would be substantially stronger. Perhaps that structural upgrade comes from the back bar design.

 

nope, you are correct. Think of it exactly like an external ODD (with an embedded GPU too). It's not going to be a dock unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you view things.

Yes, given a long enough cable, it might be less annoying not to have it attached. The only way I could see having it attached working would be a sheet underneath. Otherwise you would throw off the balance. Still, I will have to be careful not to jerk the thing off a table by picking up the laptop. I did that once with an external HD to disastrous results. Jerk being the operative word here.

 

IIRC, beaups said that a front-opening ODD mounts directly on top of the Z2, not via cable.

 

This is the quote that made me visualize a cable connection.

 

From what my memory, it's going to daisy chain not piggyback.

Looking at the statement again, I can see how it may not mount directly on top of the Z. The problem with IIRC is that I don't always RC.

 

I take that to mean that the ODD can stand vertically and independently connected by a Thunderbolt cable, not that it will stand vertically on top of the laptop. Can you explain how you vizualize the connection you are thinking about working?

I really hope that is not the new Z, it looks awful, I have been holding my tongue about the things I don't like about the Z2 but it just seems like the more we hear and speculate the worse it sounds.
That picture looks totally awful. I just think it can't be the new Z.

Actually, this Dell is the first one I thought of when I saw the hexagon silver cap with bumps on this possible Z2 -- it's not even a premium Dell machine (although Vostro V130 did get design queue from the first Adamo)

That's what some said about those photos that first surfaced of the SA/SB/SC. I'm convinced this is the new Z. The only reason why I may think otherwise is why they didn't include photos of the external unit since both come as one package.

I'm curious what BEAUPS has to say. He should have just leaked it out.....
