It would indeed beBut in this case actually the article revealed some new details for us.
Something else:
Here is the site for Tuesday's Sony event: (link)
You can watch the presentations there, though unfortunately there's not much information about the "ultimate mobile PC".

TofuTurkey Married a Champagne Mango
This is different:
USB between the different parts? It sounds proprietary, certainly not Thunderbolt.
The ultra mobile PC seems to be the flagship, at least in the foreseeable future. Either (a) that is the new Z, or (b) it is > the Z. Anybody know what's the rough estimate between the time Sony reveals a product versus when it actually begins shipping? Given the relatively little bit of information on the ultra mobile PC, the ship date must still be quite far out.
Edit: I watched the videos of the S1/S2, the presenter said the tablets will be released this Fall. Which means that the Ultimate Mobile PC (UMPC) should be released no earlier than that, likely even later. -
We all saw the concept design-it was delayed because of issues with the chassis. I don't believe that the ultimate PC is the SA because of the ports but if the SA changed slightly from the concept pictures well i wouldn't be surprised.
-
I was wondering about that. You would think he would at least confirm whether or not that is the new Z. My only guess is that he doesn't want to say. Why?
-
Agreed.
-
How come there are less and less pages on this thread? At one point it was up on 101 pages. Now it's back down to 96 pages for me? What's going on?
-
Is it just me or is someone else missing some pages as well? A few hours ago there were 101 pages already, now it's 96. (and I haven't changed my "posts per page"-settings)
*edit*
olo beat me there -.- -
He's online and reading the thread as we speak. Hopefully we'll get some answers
-
lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Still finding it a bit incongruous that many people are between the X220 and the new Z: "let's see, should I get this low res, black plastic 1990 military looking thing for $1,200 or should I wait and see how this new, sleek, 1/4" thin, 2.4lb hybrid, $3,000+ computer turns out?!"
Not saying I don't see the logic - and the absence of worthy ultraportables in between those two, but it's like, what's wrong with this picture? -
Maybe Rachel is cleaning up our numerous off-topic posts (the ones like this
).
-
The picture is definately not the SA. the ports are totally different than the SB and i'm pretty certain that the SA would be identical to the SB in the external enclosure.
-
My hypothesis for missing pages is Beaups or someone else is deleting Beaups' revealing posts.
I've gone back to post 681 and it looks like Beaups' juicy tidbits have vanished. I've also backtracked Beaups' last 60 posts and nothing revealing is mentioned.
Hope he's not in trouble! -
TofuTurkey Married a Champagne Mango
Much drama in this thread
-
What happened to my post. Reposting this.....Read about that secondary unit (in Bold Text) below.
-
Lol, indeed
That's strange. He should be rather rewarded for building up interest and tension in many forum members/readers for the new Vaios
-
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony is coming around and demanding said posts are deleted.
-
There's no conspiracy here, let's move on, ok?
-
That's great. So - is this newly appeared picture indeed Z2 which we discuss and which you hold in your hands?
-
TofuTurkey Married a Champagne Mango
Get your sunglasses out!
Sorry, couldn't resist...
-
LOL, thats what they always say
-
Ok, let's reformulate the question:
Could anyone here confirm that he/she saw this machine on the picture below (or something that might look like it) in reality beyond the SONY presentation in Japan on April 26/27 2011?
Here is the picture:
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
actually nothing, people work, simple as that -
You should have stayed silent Beaups, left them dangling a bit longer.
-
ha. well. regardless of Beaups poking in or not... we are dangling a bit longer. and we will...
-
I was just wondering if it is wise for Sony to release the new Z this year but to wait for the next CES. The SA is just around the corner being able to finally become the "temporary" Z replacement.
In June Intel will probably unveil their new Ivy Bridge CPUs at Computex. So any announcement of a totally new notebook will have the connotation of having yesterday's hardware even though Ivy Bridge CPUs won't probably be shipped until early 2012. Considering that Windows 8 will also be released in early 2012 there might be a lot of people pushing their buying descision backwards until the real new stuff is out. -
The SA is not a Z replacement and will not occupy the same marketing niche just because it is light and relatively expensive.
-
lol you wish, sandy bridge is effectively just starting to sell now.
-
mmmm... Pardon the enquiry. I was looking for the quote from Beaups that I referenced on p 89 with my text above, but it seems to be gone. At least I couldn't find it again. Being new here, I didn't know we could remove our posts. Sorry, but this is a bit confusing. Perhaps someone could explain the operative protocol. My apologies if this is somehow an inappropriate question.
-
Today "mysteriously" 5-6 pages of posts were deleted (the ones revealing information about the new Z). The moderators said that it was not them.
-
^ Surely the moderators know how this technically could be done. Can I, for example, go back and delete my posts? Is this possible? If I choose edit and remove all text does a post disappear? Sorry if this seems off topic, but it does change the substance of the thread pretty significantly. This is most interesting.
-
I aasume you can ask a moderator to remove posts you would like gone rather than just whittling them down to posts of the minimum size.
-
^ I thought the moderators said they didn't delete any.
Before these posts disappeared I had invested the time to read with interest every entry on every page and to me the heart of the great majority of the discussion was based in the idea that Beaups had seen and knew a substantial amount about the Z2. Now to find those posts that most clearly describe Beaups' version of Z2 suddenly disappear does strike me as worthy of a question or two. Beaups, you haven't expressed any upset about your missing posts, just a desire to move on. Let me just ask straightforwardly, did you cause your posts to be removed and, if so, why? Obviously, you don't have to say anything, but from my perspective you've placed yourself in the middle of this discussion as someone with special knowledge and you have some credibility at play here. It doesn't work, at least for me, if you have withdrawn after the fact your descriptions with the expection that we simply proceed without some explanation.
Again, I am new to this forum and I apologize if I have stepped outside the accepted norms by asking this. -
Ever since I don't know when Intel showed at least a little bit of their upcoming processors generation in the summer/ early fall either at Computex or the IDF. I agree that they are mostly announced with all the specs, etc. at CES half a year later but every person who is at least a little bit interessted in PC hardware knows by fall what Intel has in mind for the next generation of CPUs.
-
Allengb please let's move on from discussion of how posts have been deleted. It's quite obvious that the poster responsible for making those posts for their own personal reasons has removed some old posts. Btw, I had a look on page 89 and your post i believe is still there- on a different computer it could fall on the page after or before.
A lot of the information is now out there right now and we just have to be pleased to recieve past insights. -
Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
For whatever reason, i think it's best that we just move on since now that it's been announced, we can only wait. Beaups may have his reasons and if he wanted to share them, he'd tell us (as opposed to asking us to just continue our merry way). As for whoever asked about whether or not that's the image at the Sony conference... yes it is.
according to this link:
Sony Global - Sony IT Mobile Meeting
posted a while back in this thread by emev (check out the Strengthening Vaio video) -
^thanks. I think the silence is "yes".
As we could see clearly, the blue USB 3.0 on the right side + HDMI and seemingly black carbon cover of the dispaly set, 16:9 aspect ratio panel, and, finally, the fact that the overall size of this device does not have (visually) the place for ODD signify that we have fully equipped ultralight PC, not a netbook, not 11-inch smartbook or whatever.
To my personal view, this is the exact product which all of us discuss here. Tentative Z2. Happy to err. -
Thanks, managed to extract a better image of the Vaio, attached below. Ports on the side seems to be headphone, some other port (symbols look like LAN?), HDMI, USB 2.0 (does it say CHARGE above?), USB 3.0 and DC power connector.

Spoke to the EU sales department today and they came with nothing new. The Z-series will be replaced but they don't know with exactly what. They were quiet confounded though as they said the Z-series has been their bestselling product (Swedish market).
-
bjornb,
Yes, LAN looks like in X series - here is a special construction.
External dock is based on USB 2.0...? Could anyone decipher the white letters above it?
UP: very likely - CHARGE (?). Then the dock connector is on the left side... We are still hoping to see Thunderbolt
.
-
Regarding CHARGE - I am thinking its a permanently powered USB port (so you can charge your mobile phone while the laptop is off), on my Dell (E6400) laptop it was called USB PowerShare.
Seems likte the Thunderbold port must be on the left side yes. -
^At first I read CHARGE as well, with your description that totally makes sense!
-
It seems that 'CHARGE' is written on the wrong port, usually such ports are colour-coded (unless all the USB ports are blue, which I doubt).
-
USB 3.0 ports are usually blue I think.. So the Charge port is just a 2.0 port I guess.
-
Charge ports aren't always color coded and yes, USB 3.0 ports are blue. I just need pics of the other side and the 'module' now
-
really? for me it's the price and the release date.
I'm actually glad about the thicker looking screen portion. Hoping this means less screen bruising. -
^starting at $2k for base config. End of june/early july.
-
This was already stated: base config just below 2k USD, release end of June/early July (of course this is no official information and can change anytime).
Edit:
Exactly
-
Yikes, 2k for a base config is rather expensive IMO. I sure hope that these new systems can rival the power of Alienware laptops. The M14x with a maxed out config (even with the gimmick 3GB video memory) costs $2000 HKD (~260 USD) less than my VAIO Z which sports a CPU with 2 less cores, RAM with 534 Mhz slower speed, a GPU with 2 GB less RAM and much less horsepower. The only thing that favors my Z is that it weighs less than half as much as the M14x, and the SSD.
-
Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
The M14x is for a different audience... it also weighs about twice that of the Z and screen res is low compared to Z.
The Z is for those mobile professionals who want a powerhouse within a 13" chassis as light as possible that can do stuff... not true for an M14x, whose target audience are mobile gamers... Anyone can make a fat and heavy laptop... you just literally shove everything in the chassis... but to get all that the Z has in it... that's better engineering IMHO. -
Yeah I mentioned that in my edited post, sorry that I forgot to mention about that in the first place. Still, there isn't much excuse to set a price tag like that for inferior hardware when somebody else. Plus, any heavy notebook can be easily carried with a proper laptop bag (though I still love the fact that I can carry my Z with my thumb and index finger).
While I'm pretty sure the new Z's are not gaming rigs, it's still nice to see Sony get more competitive on their competitors.
