Oh okay. I thought I remember hearing the main unit has HDMI and external will have both VGA and HDMI. Oh well. VGA is definitely the fattest connector of all of them today.
-
VGA still is a must with most older projectors unfortunately. Some day we will rid ourselves of it, but not just yet.
-
DVI is fatter, but only a few desktop replacement / gaming laptops have them.
And SCART is surely the fattest, but I don't think I've seen any laptops with them.
-
There are advantages to VGA too -- it's not restricted in max resolution and frequency, like the digital connectors are. Pump up the frequency and you can get pretty much any resolution through VGA; certainly much higher than DVI and HDMI.
My photo processing monitor is a 2560x1600 Mitsubishi CRT. Even with dual-link DVI, I can't run this faster than 60 Hz. With VGA, I get 72 Hz. -
aren't there any hdmi to vga adaptors?
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
there are lots of those, still an adapter is something you lose, too easily, specially if you use several different projectors, like is common in a company -
It's not a must if you can use a HDMI/whatever -> VGA adapter, similar to how MacBooks do it. I would prefer that approach, since I don't use old projectors every day and don't want a legacy port for 1 day out of 360.
-
The port isn't, but the video card might not let it go all the way.
Yes, I can hook up my CRT at 2560x1600@60 to my desktop via VGA, but not to my Z122GX. -
Well, Sony outlet site is all jacked up right now. Not showing anything priced above $2200 and not showing ANY current Z's. I am also having issues browsing on it. This may be a sign of somthing being posted for sale.
-
More likely, on both. Check FCC documents. The main unit has it.
-
No, be patient. Not right now.
-
Can we expect an annoucement this month?
-
WWDC was a bust on hardware announcements so I guess that leaves Sony some room too.
-
Macbooks use DP to VGA.
HDMI carries no analog signal, so adapters are complicated. Adapters require a digital to analog converter, HDCP turns into a mess, supported resolutions get complicated, etc. It's not as simple as DVI->VGA was. I'm all for keeping it around for a couple more years. -

Yes it was a bust. I'm kind of surprised the iOS5 isn't running on an iPhone5, I'm wondering if it's due to LTE issues (on Verizon anyway). Anyway IIRC from the FCC docs Aiga pointed to the Z21 comes with 3G options, not LTE as well. -
the reason there is no new iphone just yet is because the iphone 4 just launched on verizon in february, so launching the new iphone 5 in july would not be a good thing for verizon customers who just got an iphone 4
-
TofuTurkey Married a Champagne Mango
I have a Samsung Charge, which uses LTE (very quick btw). The phone's a bit thick (literally), and someone on this forum said that's because of the LTE. If that's the case, I think it may take more effort to put say a mini-PCI version of it in a laptop.
Maybe
I had the first iPhone and when the second one came out soon after Apple gave a $100 credit just because people complained about the next release taking place so soon. Maybe Apple didn't feel like doing that again. Though people (media) were saying Verizon's iPhone 4 isn't going to sell well because they would rather wait for iPhone 5, supposedly out soon (at that time).
-
Guess I'll need to buy a 4G USB modem.
-
TofuTurkey Married a Champagne Mango
I'm using the Mobile Hotspot app, Verizon's not yet charging for tethering so I'm having a good time
It works with USB tethering too, so in that sense it's working as a USB modem.
I think I will stick to this model: my mobile phone will provide the wireless broadband access, and feed my other devices. So for the new Z, I shall once again not be getting the WWAN version. -
When's the iPhone 5 coming out?
I follow this other forum on the iPhone 5, which I plan to get, and you should read the leaks and rumors to the next iPhone 5 images. It's hilarious. The rumors are so out there compared to the rumors and speculations here on the new upcoming Z.

But anyway......
Can we assume that those images of the new Z, I think there were only two in circulation, are to be the new design of the new Z? What's perplexing, is there is no images of that 2nd unit. Why is that? -
the new models will arrive in week 30....
-
Where did you get that information?
It's only week 23 now, so if you're right, then it's still a ways out.
-
remember that ios5 isn't out yet for consumers. they'll MOST LIKELY announce iphone 4s/5 at the september event, JUST before ios5 updates are made available(unless theres been an ios5 release date i haven't been made aware of).
-
wow..this thread is really off topic now...lol, you all need a Z series update.
-
I wonder how wise it is when you consider the speed Sony changes its chassis.
I've owned now 4 Sony Vaio laptops, including two Z series (VGN and VPC) and bit gutted about the length these products seem to go on sale.
I'm now seriously considering getting rid of both of them and swapping these with MBPs instead... -
I don't think so.
-
The 2011 Q2 Warranty sheet mentions the VPCZ2 explicitly (page 9):
ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/MANUALS/GUARANTEE/2011Q2_GUAR_EN.PDF
The announcement should not be too far away. -
Why do you care how often they refresh?
-
I think it helps soothe the pain of spending a large amount of money on Sony hardware. The more often they change, the less chance likely you'll ever have the chance to get parts easily (that is if you're not in the US or Japan) if it breaks down.
I have a VPCZ1 which stopped working after I accidently a tablespoon woth of water, tried to repair it myself (stupid me..), damaged the ribbon cable, bought a replacement for it for $70 and it's the wrong one, bought a brand new keyboard replacement and it's not the keyboard that is the problem but the whole keyboard assembly. So...basically right now I've got a laptop I bought for £2600 little over a year ago which I can't repair and I've been thinking of taking a hammer to get of rid for good.
Sorry for the rant, but as you can see I'm pretty frustrated by my own stupidity and lack of easily accessible Sony parts in the UK
-
I spilled water on the keyboard on my VPC-Z as well and the keyboard, touchpad, and even one of the SSDs got damaged. I dissembled the machine and tried to dry it but it didn't work. Sony repaired it for free and gave me new SSDs since it's still under warranty though...
-
It was expected that the WWDC will be solely focused on software than hardware for a few months now. Of course, you'll only know this if you frequently visit those popular Mac fan forums.
The earliest revision/release of the next iPhone is rumored to be around the time of the next generation iPod, so it's roughly Sept/Oct this year. For "4G" capabilities, the next iPhone is also rumored to have only HSPA+ but no LTE.
-
I doubt the i/me/minePhone will ever run on LTE. IIRC, the legal requirements for use of that block of spectrum require that only open/competitive sales platforms (app strores) are allowed.
-
I've seen the official price list with the information....
-
If it will be available in week 30, the announcement should be in less than 7 weeks.
-
math FTW!!!
-
Lol
I wanted to emphasize that soon it should be announced. But now re-reading my comment, it really sounds a bit too obvious. -
Acer Announces New TimelineX Laptops
well, the 13.3 inch timelinex 3830t with full voltage SB processor and geforce 540m GT (pretty much same performance as Whistler XT - radeon HD 6740m, which may be the gpu in the z) is out at 4.1 lbs and with MSRP $779.99
looks extremely tempting -
"(...)and 1366x768 resolution. No higher resolution options are available at the time of this writing".
Not so tempting (for my development needs). -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
nomps, it throttles a lot, try running anything intensive, notebookcheck review got a throttle while running some random game in 6 min -
that doesn't come close to beating the current z though :/
crappier chassis, crappy res, heavier -

Every time a 13inch ultraportable is announced I always get excited with "Something as good as the z2 that I can actually buy!?!?" The answer always ends up being no.
Just release it sony so that I can finally sleep. -
As much as I want to see the new Z, I find it good that Sony keeps the new products secret. It's more interesting to guess what it'll be like and to look for new information, than to wait for a known product to get to the shops.
(Unlike some mobile phone announcements, where they announce a nice phone half a year in advance, and when it's finally released, nobody wants it anymore.) -
Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
So true, but i actually want some competition, it'll drive down the price
. Except the average consumer has no idea what's good out there...
-
Guys Check This Out:
iPhone 5......lol.
I know this is way off-topic, but this thread is getting dull without any new information on the upcoming Z
. Time for a commercial break. Since there's an iPhone 5/4s fan-base here, I thought you'd be interested to see the rumored iPhone 5/4s. Got it from this forum I follow. Whomever created it, did a great job - its very Apple and its rumored images on the iPhone 5/4s as well as anticipated specs.
. Had to crop the image into 3 parts. This forum has file size limitations.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Just to keep it Z related. I really like that black brushed finish on the iPhone 5/4s. Would love to see that as a lid design option on the new Z.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

Psh....android phones ftw. We had hotspotting before apple =P
-
Fully agree
-
Thanks mitpianoman.
-
Hotspotting refers to the ability to tether your 3G/4G data connection via the wifi antenna, i.e. create wifi hot spots
-
Dont get what
I am agreeing with goldentreesang on the part of "Android phones ftw"
