I disagree, it looks wider than the SA to me :(
    sa: http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachments/sony/66309d1307729795-review-sony-vaio-sa-photo.jpg

Quite a clever design, giving you an angled keypad and proping the screen up marginally. Though i wonder how it feels when you open it up.
And using it on your lap might get quite uncomfortable.

Dissapointed in the screen bezel though. Surely being an ultraportable they could have utilised all that realestate, or made the whole thing smaller.
it's not a big issue, but would have been the icing on the cake had they got it right :(

I don't get why they would make a new model, and give it such a big bezel.
    VPC-Z:

    why sony why?

Shouldn't new technology be making things better? Moving forwards, not backwards etc...
I mean it's like they've gone and kept the same shell dimensions from the old z, and just put a smaller (12.5"?) screen in.
smells of rushed design work to me.

never said anyone was wrong. :p good that the vent is on the side and not near the screen, this is one thing which is stopping me from buying the SA/Sb line, apart from the poor screen.

VGA? what's it doing with VGA? i thought we were in the age of digital?
am i missing something? is there dvi on the other side?

oh one more negative thing, external GPU looks huge. either that or this is a 12" laptop.
could just be perspective making it look so big.

i waited a year for this?

they removed the gpu, ODD, multiple ports, barrel hinge, etc., then use proprietary SSD, and the laptop got wider and longer with the same screen size?

was this all a tradeoff for thinness? sounds like a pretty bad tradeoff

what im suspecting is that it cost too much to make the current VPC-Z and the cost would only increase if they followed the same principle of integrating everything in the new Z, so sony decided to make the new z more profitable

After these new pictures and speculations, I still consider myself interested in the new Z.

Anyway, if the product will not satisfy me 100%, I'll have to look somewhere else. Do you guys have an idea about a laptop in the 14" inches space that can pair up with the Z technical spec? (FHD, full voltage, GPU especially)

Anything you reccomend to check out?

honestly...the Z stands so high among laptops of all sizes that it is hard to beat period.

but, one of the more popular options is the 16x9 Radiance screen Envy 14s. apparently they don't sell those screens anymore, but you might be able to find a stray envy 14 in a brick-and-mortar place.

yeah i'm having trouble finding any alternatives, so may have to go with this.
by the time decent alternatives come up, ivy bridge will be out and sony will have their own update.

I'm just hoping that this z with the weight of the egpu is the same or less than the weight of the sony sa/sb. otherwise sony are kidding themselves. anyone know the weight including the external unit?

But the hinge on the new Z is blocking the entire back. Where exactly does the airflow go. Oh well, we'll for sure in a week i suppose.

When the lid is open the base seems elevated...maybe that helps with the hot air being vented out in the back?

Is displayport found anywhere on the main or external unit? Perhaps in the lower part of the left side? The pics of the right side do not show a displayport connector. This makes me wonder how the external unit is going to be attached, if is thunderbolt based. I guess reports of a USB-based thunderbolt connection could be true. If this is true, I would hope some type of adapter could be used for displayport output.

I think it is long overdue to replace the VGA port on the Z series with displayport and use an adapter for VGA. Without displayport, I presume connecting 2560x1600 displays will require solutions such as Vidock.

On a different note, I do not think that is a great idea to connect the external unit on the right side.

Can someone comment and the screen size? Is it still 13inch or did they make it smaller? I kinda want it at 13 inch.

Before seeing your post, I also wanted to make a comparison of the bezels. Attached is a little high-end 13" Vaio (bezel) history. VGN-S, VGN-SZ, VGN-Z, VPC-Z1, VPC-Z2.

In my opinion the VGN-S and the VPC-Z1 have the nicest bezels, the VGN-Z is ok and the VGN-SZ and VPC-Z2 have very ugly bezels.

So all in all I'm disappointed by the new Z's bezel. The image of the screen posted by eddieaus (thanks!) looks like that of a cheap netbook. The other photos seem nice btw.

I know that it has been stated earlier in this thread that the sticker on the main unit will be labeled as "Made in Japan". I wonder if Sony will pull a "sensational stunner" on us by having the main unit assembled in Japan & the external box thingy assembled in China to reduce their costs! That will be "awesome"! :p

if there is one thing you will be looking at 99% of the time is that the screen and the bezel around it.

Very dissatisfied with no ingenuity in engineering of the lid. I bet sony has outsourced their engineering of even the highest end laptop (Z) to a Taiwan odm. (original design manufacture)

Lets see if the specs engineering will makeup for this ugliness.

I don't mean traveling as to work and home in a day, more like actually traveling to different cities for different clients. Sometimes when I go out to do work, I don't get to head home, I have to stay at a hotel for a few days.

CD/DVDs are still a big part of the IT world and people still use them.

sigh.. the folks who guessed the feet on back of the lid would touch the ground were right.. is it just me or does this design look ugly? i guess they made it touch the ground to reduce heat at the bottom of the laptop. would have preferred the battery bump serving that function.. high specs or not, i will be sticking with my vpc-z1.

its a shame that the bezel is no longer the ugliness aspect of this laptop..
