oh thats great news cause the 9300m gs is crappppppppppp for gaming
, i got the sony vaio z13 i7 640m 256gb ssd with nvidia 330m and its still very good for gaming but not perfect, i hope this new one will have a better graphic than the gt 330m , can you tell me the name of the new one coming the 13 inch sandy bridge and what GPU will it have and when do you think it will be released? thanks pal
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Its called the VPC-Z21 and it will have a GPU at least on par with AMD 6630M, but I think there will be a better option. -
anyone know roughly when it will be released? and is the AMD 6630M better than the GT330M in the z13?
-
You're kidding me, so the two items together, it weighs more than the SA/SB, has an HUGE additional bulky thing to carry, and has a graphics card that is barely an improvement...
-
If you need to always carry the GPU/ODD with you, it seems an evidence that this new Z is not for you. And the global weight is known for months now. I don't understand how it is possible to still complaint about that...
Different needs, different computers...
-
No offense & I sincerely apologize if I do.......
As the "famous" saying goes for those situations, "you're using it wrong!"
Of course, I'm just kidding.
-
Is that me or not a single Vaio out there including the Z2 uses gorilla glass for screen protection??
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Im sure gorilla glass is very expensive. Only a handful of laptops out there have it. To me it seems kind of unneccessary on a laptop. -
I can barely see the exhaust vents in the picture below:

Oh damn good eyes!! Looks like both eddieaus and beaups are right. Vents on both the rear and the left.
Can we get some pictures of the Z with the sheet battery? -
so BOTH vents are exhausts? as in fans are blowing hot air out of them.
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
I guess the back is exhaust and the left is intake. -
Not to mention its normslly used as a top layer and is glossy....
-
Thes second piece is far from huge, itsa bad picture. Use the 5.25" slot as a point of reference.
-
Dont think its a 6550m either
-

Good call
What will be the highest upgradable option? 1gb of 6770? -
^ the unit i saw was a 6630m. I didnt get to take it apart but id be surprised if it is upgradeable
-
the pic on itsa is CG right? not actual picture?
-
^ hard to tell at the very least its quite a bad angle
-
Not really, no. But it adds another step to the factory process, which can be expensive. And it's glass, and even if strong, it's breakable, so the device it's in has to be made rigid to protect the glass. That can add far more costs than the glass itself.

goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Theres not gonna be anything better than 6630!? Damn
Its probably CG. Looks too perfect to be an actual picture. -
What is the palmrest is made of? The least thing is to appreciate that the arbitrary piece of cheap plastic is gone (as was on the VPC-Z). My guess is that it's injected CFRP (carbon fibre) as with the normal chassis construction, but it might be aluminium. Anyone know?
Basically, I like everything about this laptop except for the bezel being a little too big and the trackpad STILL being too small. Apple got it right, swallow your pride Sony and make that trackpad 1.5X the size!
Every iteration of Sony's flagship 13" line seems to have been three steps forward, one step back. Examples: VPC-Z much better than VGN-Z, but why the plastic palmrest instead of metal?? VPC-Z2, better than VPC-Z but why'd the bezel get bigger?
Overall though, I'm happy and intend to buy me a nice standard voltage i7 model with 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM, full HD. To have all that at less than 1.2kg is insane!!!
-
Really? I still think the Z1 looks far better in design than the Z2. Though the specs may be better, the design is not edgy.
Really? I just upgraded my Z112 to Z135, and after looking at those photos, I have no regrets. You got yourself, if I recall, a beefed-up fully-loaded Z1. Don't forget why you bought it to begin with - that barrel hinge.

I'm not to fond of this design. Usually, in the past, when photos are leaked i.e. VGN-SZ , VGN-Z, VPC-Z1, I can hardly wait to get one. The design speaks loud. But the Z2 looks too much like the X and SA. The Z line should be different, edgy, and ahead of its time. I'm glad I got a Z13, I'll wait for the Z3 to arrive in a year and a half. I still think the VGN-Z and VPC-Z1 are by far the sexiest laptop Sony has made; SZ comes second. -
dear god...i just hope that trackpad is bigger than the current Z. it actually looks smaller
-
Only a 6630m? Now that's dissapointing. When would Sony make better gaming laptops?
-
I agree. Sony really got lazy with the design, its just like the SA with nothing special...huge bezel, lots of space around keyboard, and the whole footprint seems bigger than the old Zs. Also, the design with the hinge and the fact that the screen supports the back seems strange. Does that mean that every time you open the lid the laptop will move according to the viewing angle of the screen? doesn't make sense to me
-
oh noes, all of a sudden I'm freaking out that it might actually be smaller!! why Sony WHY?!?!
-
Will the external unit utilize eyefinity and have another video output, say, DP? True dual monitor support?
-
I'm still using a VGN-S without an external mouse and it has a very small trackpad but it's perfectly usable. If it was bigger, I would be touching it all the time accidentally while typing.
Btw the touchpad of the VPC-Z1 felt worse and was not so easy to use (maybe just a question of getting used to it). -
eager to get one
-
um...i use a MBP as my only computer and 90% of the time without an external mouse. 'nuff said.
lol
-
so, it's either the LG if it gets a 900p screen, or the SA if it gets a 900p or 1080p screen, how disappointing
there's still a chance for the Z, but i dont see anything enticing about it -
This is a major letdown. If they are going to make the external dock a vertical standalone unit, why on earth wouldn't they put a beefy card inside? I was under the impression that the dock would connect to the laptop like the sheet battery. That would justify a 6630.
This design is plain dumb. The unit itself alone is nice, but its no replacement by any stretch to the current all in one Z. Possibly only in battery life. I will carry the .35 lbs for my dedicated and comparable 330m GPU. -
everything is just theory now
let's wait on the actual thing -
Another thing that will rub me the wrong way is if they force the cost of bluray on us just to get the GPU.
-
I wouldn't be surprised, after all it's Sony.
My main concern is durability of those rubber feet attached to screen. And why there's no mic in jack? Or I'm missing something?
Cheers,
Miki -
I'm surprised that bluray drives haven't dropped more in price considering they have been around for quite a long while.
-
To accommodate a larger battery underneath (very much like the X series and why the X series trackpad was small). -
The Z is not aimed at gamers. Never has been, never will be.
-
Aaa, just 2 USB ports on VPC-Z21? Much like a netbook?
-
so essentially, sony made the laptop and battery wider and longer in order to stay thin..
-
Or like a macbook pro
-
:/ at least the mbp has all of its ports sensibly on the left. the last thing i need is to have the mouse receiver in the way of my mouse/
-
There is at least one USB port on the external unit though.
-
I can't see those pictures, link is broken.

Beside the optical drive, there can't be something too powerful in there (requiring a good cooling system), judging the size of the external unit. You can see the vents on the right - curious what they've packed inside.
-
I'm not impressed.
When I first heard of the new Z, it was like the perfect solution for me - mobile, thin, great for taking it with me to university. And for at home a docking station with an external GPU unit.
Right. Now, it's still mobile and thin and light, but the external unit is a joke. 6630m? Seriously? I mean, if it needs to be a m-GPU, please a powerful one and not that crap.
The problem is: There is no other option. At the moment I'm just waiting for the eGPU by sonnett which is using the thunderbolt port, but even when it's released there is no notebook I can use it with, apart from the MBP. I hate Mac.
So it seems like I will buy the new Z only because it has the thunderbolt port.
-.-
An option without the external unit would be really great, I mean... I wouldn't use it anyway...
By the way, does someone here now any release date of the sonnett thunderbolt eGPU?
