Sony Vaio Z21 - Video - CHIP Online (von Chip.de) yet another video, nothing new actually...

I bought my Z1 from them, they are awesome. Communication was fast, and I believe they check the machine before they ship. If the overhead isn't so high, I won't hesitate buying all Zs from them -
They do more than check it - as I said in my earlier post, they convert it to ENglish, etc., so they don't just power it up once.
-
Very good communication, I've had them hunt down Japan only accessories in the past and they do so quickly.

They are more expensive though right? Wouldn't it be cheaper is you just bought direct from sony?
-
ok then i think i'm gonna order mine at conics!
thanks TofuTurkey! -
TofuTurkey Married a Champagne Mango
That's why I said the overhead is high
The thing about Conics is that they get the Zs from Sony Japan, which provides all the possible configurations. The Z1 I have has HDD and no ODD, FHD, iLink, Intel 6300. That isn't possible to get via Sony US.
Over the past weekend I completed my project to use RAID0 2.5" SSDs in the HDD/ODD space. -
Yes, they are great! that was the whole point of the post that you quoted. Buy with confidence! Conics is as legit as they come
I have another question, does the gold model come with a gold sheet battery? Historically this has NOT been the case, I don't expect any different. I do hope that, considering the sheet battery is such a large part of the computer, it will match in color. -
you crammed 2 2.5"s in the odd/hdd bay area? :O
-

Yeah, check out this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/478785-vaio-vpc-z1-hdd-option-custom-raid-thoughts.html
I plugged the SSDs into the custom PCB adapter this weekend, I took a pic of that too, I think I shall add to that thread above... -
Unfortunately, Conics' pricing is currently screwed up. They have the 256GB SSD as an option for $2,604!!!!

Doubtful. Otherwise we probably would have seen pictures of it already. -
Yea that is what I thought. Still on the fence.
Hate ATI, don't like the plug in to dock, not enough usb ports, no express card. Why the hell couldn't they at least put more USB 3 or some eSATA on the PMD? Why no DVI-DL? or DP? The price and features of the PMD make me just want to just buy a ViDock for the Z1 even more and just forget this mess.
The only real hope for expanding the Z2 is that the LightPeak thing can be adapted for something other than the PMD. If it is simply an issue of LP interfacing with TB I am pretty sure that some of the smart people I know could build an optical to copper adapter.
I guess that is my real gripe with the Z2, everyone wanted more monitors and now we get that but in such a crap way. Perhaps we can do hi res of the HDMI port but if you want to run 2 digital displays you need to plug in the PMD and plug an HDMI cable into the main unit. This is annoying. I think I'd rather just dock the Z1 with a Matrox adapter stuck on the dock or dock the Z1 and plug in a ViDock.
I keep going over and over it. The Z2 would be a great work machine, except I really want to get into some 2560x1600 DELL monitors and I don't even know if they will work with the Z2 at full resolution.
I think the best thing I can do at this point is get a Z2 CTO and return it, with the hopes that they listen to me when I tell them why I am returning it and that somehow my small voice makes it's way to someone who cares so they don't make the same stupid mistakes with the Z3.
I really want to like the Z2. There really is nothing like the Z series out there, I just can't believe how much they messed up the PMD. I can learn to live with not having a GPU and ODD in the main unit, but the PMD basically doesn't do crap. That being said I still want the Z2 anyway, but I don't think I have a use for it. -
^ I completely hear what you say. I'm vacillating between an SA and a Z2 at this point. Neither is quite perfect. If I had a Z1, there is no way I'd be upgrading now -- I'd wait a year and see what the next Z looked like.
-
^ I just like to get new stuff, this is NOT fair, I love my Z1 but it is not brand new anymore, I mean it is in mint condition, but I want a new toy. Maybe I'll just buy a $3K automatic watch instead, I need another Swiss Auto watch about as much as I need the Z2 (not at all, but that is not the point is it?)
-
^buy the automatic watch!! It'll work for 20 years and doesn't require service packs or batteries
just some violent shaking (rewind) if we don't use it daily.
-
Cowboy, sell me your Z1 and put it towards your Z2. I hear that $899 is the going rate?
-
Correct. Japanese models often have options unavailable elsewhere (and not just colors; often times better processors and such are only out in Japan first). Sony usually keeps some stuff for themselves
For example, when I ordered my VGN-Z90, I got it without the built-in camera. Didn't need or want it. The US CTOs often don't get that fine a level of detail in CTO options. -
You'd have to pry the Z1 from my cold dead fingers, as I stated before the Z2 can't replace my Z1 and I don't need to sell anything to buy a Z2... I'll just buy it.
I am selling the Blu-ray drive from my Z1 ($500 CTO option) that is as much of my Z1 as anyone is ever going to get.
FYI if anyone is interested in the BD drive... I am very reasonable, I don't expect to get even half of what I paid. two bills perhaps? -
At first I really didn't like the new Z design at all, but it's really starting to grow on me. Has it been confirmed that the backlit keyboard is indeed green?
And also, how is the keyboard in general Beaups? Does it have any flex or anything? -
^beaups said that it's not really green, it's just a greenish white, like those glowing-in-the-dark items.
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
^I've seen pictures of it on. I forget where though, ill try to look. iirc beaups tried typing on it and nothing about it felt weird, but he said that he's used to chiclet keyboards.
Most hands-on reviews have highlighted that it has a very small travel distance of 1mm and may seem weird at first, but you get used to it within a day or 2. -
^Haven't read any reports of keyboard flex. Some reports of flex in the casing but some of these were preview units and not final.
-
so does the lid flex as much as the Z1s? if its more solid now, how strong is the center of the lid(will it make 'rainbows' on the screen)?
-
Another time, all CTO in Sony Italia are down (Only Italy).. I hope to see Z up.
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
There is a video of someone purposely bending the z2 to see how much it bends. I remember it was on youtube, in a hands-on. -
Like my watch?
-
^A little less green than that.
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
ugh its already the 11th!!! Why isn't the Z up on the USA website yet!?
-
i think we have to wait for another 2 weeks. : (
-
... why did they pick green for the backlight.. sounds like it'll look like something from alienware
and it's going to be out on the 27th, then it'll probably take 2 weeks to get it, so we really have over a month to wait
at least ill have one by the start of the school year, last time i waited until february before getting my laptop -
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Yea...At least when its up on USA it will actually be for purchase, not preorder......RIGHT!??!
Its not bright green like the alienwares. Its like a white with a touch of green to soften the lights. Sometimes bright white LEDs are a little too much in the dark. And it makes it a little different
And i feel like you will like it when you see it
EDIT: after rereading what I posted it sounds like I've seens it myself. I have not. This is just what I have gathered from that one picture and what beaups has told us. -
Gold and brown with a slight green glow... I can dig that! I might have to buy this damn thing just for the aesthetic alone.
-
i think if you want to CTO, you need to pre order. but if you want preconfig you can grab them at brick & mortar.
-
according to that logic...every laptop with a backlight comes from alienware because alienwares can have blue backlights too
but ya, hopefully its less painful to look at than blue backlights. -
Thats a great deal! Too bad I have one.
-
Not sure if this has already been posted yet, but it's now up on Amazon.com for pre-order:
*CLICK* -
Sonystyle Hong Kong finally put up a teaser page for the new Z2.
I am guessing preorder page will be up soon and pick up at the end of the month. -
Looks like $1999 without dock. Didnt beaups say that it would retail for this much with the dock?
-
people have said that amazon overcharges during preorders.
-
Is it possible that the backlit of the golden and the blue one differ from the black/carbon one? Because the LEDs e.g. the one from the power button is different on the golden device.
EDIT
That's how the backlit looks like on a pic from SONYSTYLE.
Check out that vid at about 0:40 to see it flex. But as already stated by another user from this forums, being able to flex a bit doesn't mean that it's not sturdy.
Besides that beaups mentioned a few times that the lid feels a lot sturdier compared to the Z1.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=LmryJzUo0TA -
Did you mean this:
????VAIO????! -
If ota-con was referring to that page, it isn't actually a teaser really. It's a page telling you to sign up to view new information and offers for VAIO computers.
I've signed up with my HK Sony account to receive updates for both e-mail and SMS, and so far I have received nothing.
The grey line with the VAIO does somewhat resemble the edge of the Z2's lid though. -
Several users reported greenish tint backlight. Check the image below:

Cheers,

^looks kinda old, worn out. Hope that's not the case in reality.
-
I think it is a teaser since in the link you see "teaser." And the pic is of the new Z. The pic is similar to the one on the Taiwan Sonystyle site. The staff at Sonystyle Hong Kong says the new Z will launch within 2 months.

YouTube - VAIO Z?????VPCZ2????????????????2?‏ (nice walk around, check mouse buttons action at 2:16 - flexing????)

4:36 flex.......nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

The trick is to run VM's on another machine.
I like having my VM's online 24/7 - I run an Ubuntu VM on my server at home. Couldn't live without it cos I love irssi.
I'm running 6GB of RAM on my desktop and I'm not sure how much of a performance boost it's over 4GB, but ofc, if you can make a custom machine it doesnt take much of arguing to go for 8GB.
If the SSD's are in Raid 0 then you'll have gradual performance loss no matter. I currently have an 80GB X25-M ssd on my desktop which contains all my apps, pictures and documents (10gb free). Once I get a Z and do a clean install on it, I'm pretty sure I can save even more space than I do with my desktop.
Basically what I'm saying is that too many people in here argue for levels of hardware specification which I believe they don't need. -
All 5 VPC-Z in preorder in Amazon from 1999$ to 2700$ show only four details about spec and no hint about PMD. So it's impossible to guess the presence or absence
