Not for me. I would use my Z2 for photo editing on-the-go, and when inspecting 20MP photos, I need all the resolution I can get. That and 96% AdobeRGB coverage in a thin-and-light makes it a win-win for me.![]()
-
Where did you hear this?
I am still on the fence about the Z2, so I thought maybe Sony could sell me one, I was wrong, see below:
-
lmao, he want you to go plate the laptop... what an idea.
btw i can test 1600p for you once i received my laptop
regarding the insurance i think it worth it because it only cost about 15% of the laptop price and it is covered accidental which is i have a good experience with (i spill a whole glass of water on the keyboard on Z11 signature and they replace all internal component with no question ask)
** this is 3rd party insurance that sony outsource to not sony 1 yr warranty itself ** -
Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
Just call in and give them ur order number (should be under order status). Really simple.
I'd get a squaretrade warranty although you're in canada... so i don't know how that affects things. -
wow. dude. I mean. not sure what you were hoping to achieve.
whatever it is... I think you would have had more success talking to Sony corporate directly. This customer service rep could not help you... there's no chance he could... it's like complaining to the guy at the register at McDonald's about the quality of the beef in the Big Mac. -
I don't think he is trying to achieve anything with that conversation. The members of this forum are smarter than customer service reps
-
smarter has nothing to do with it.
people are people are people. you don't treat people that way. -
Well, it doesn't hurt to test the reps to see what they responses they have for a recent product. I mean, that conversation wasn't entirely without purpose, and certainly wasn't made exclusively for mocking the rep. I still believe that ComputerCowboy wasn't expecting much from that chat anyway.
-
That didn't sound very nice. I found that to be rude to the sales rep. Even if you're a "rich white american," no need to have a pompous attitude with the sales rep- they didn't make the product. You know full well that you came into that chatroom ready to bat with the rep.
-
There's inquiring about information about a product and then there's deliberately going into a chat and telling them to sell you the product with an attitude.
-
Yeh you should not really go in all gun blazing as the reps are just doing there job to make ends meet, no need to mention "rich white american," either, you wont get treated better..lol but hey if your that rich make your own real gold laptop ay...
-
I may have been a little misunderstood, not that I care all that much, I don't think I have "an attitude", the only person I mocked was myself by calling myself pompous (not exactly a self compliment). No one seems to have any sense of humor anymore.
I was truly hoping they could help me make up my mind on what to do here. I have spent so much time deliberating that I feel it needs to come to some sort of conclusion.
Of course the guy from Canada says I have an attitude. Maybe I do, but that isn't the point is it?
The point is that I am looking for some way to justify this purchase, and I just can't seem to find it.
For the record I think the Sony reps in the US are pretty nice. -
I agree and I'm okay with asking a rep to "sell me" on a product. I've been looking for a reason to buy this machine as well. Gold color (not plating LOL) would put me over the edge. Thin, light, decent speed AND attractive....
-
I can understand how some might construe the exchange to be rude, but I didn't read it that way. I read his cowboy's white american comment as more playful and as a bit of self-mockery. Only he knows how he meant it. So much of rudeness is contained in the tone, which is absent from written text, and I hope we all keep in mind that we might be supplying a tone that isn't meant. I've certainly seen instances where one person meant something in a light way but it was read differently. I do agree that treating people with respect is important.
I see cowboy responded while I was writing. -
I think you guys are taking the conversation the wrong way. ComputerCowboy never attacked the guy, he just assertively inquired about the product, directly told them what he wanted and (pompously as he said it) stated that he's willing to pay top dollar if they can provide him what he wants.
I mean he even thanked him for the suggestion of after market and for their time. This looks far more civil and efficient than most of the outsourcing negotiations I work with (you know ones that actually affect peoples lives).
Just my 0.02
Edit: ^ Also saw Cowboy wrote while I responded -
I love this forum, forums in general for that matter.

Is this correct? With no expresscard or sata ports, backups must go to a usb 2.0 or 3.0 external drive or a hideously expensive fast 64GB SD card until small thunderbolt backup drives become available. -
Can i delete the typo in my user name or do I need to re-register as Gator bob? Thanks.
-
I'm highly entertained by this. Keep it!
-
I'm laughing...definitely keep it! You'll stand out in a crowd.

LOL.
And to above, usb3 is fast enough no? -
What I don't understand about CC's posting is why he thought that the rep would be able to sell him given that it's unlikely that the rep: 1) has ever seen the Z2 in person; and 2) has any information not on the Sony site.
It's one thing to walk into a Porsche dealership and ask the sales rep to sell you on why to trade a 2009 Carrera in on a 2011 model. The rep should be an expert in most everything there is to know about the car including how it performs compared with the older model. But with an internet Sony rep/contractor who probably knows less about the machine then an NPR forum reader, it's a bit different. That said, I thought CC referring to himself as a "a pompous rich white american" was f***in' funny. -
Hahahaa!
i'd say keep it! -
Funny. Rep to you. Anyone who found this offensive needs to get a life. I'm sure even the Sony representative enjoyed the chat (except that he or she didn't make any money on this one).

LOL! Well, if you don't want to be Gartor Bob, can I? You totally should keep it and smile each time you post.

Kinda OT: Has anyone signed up for email notifications for this thread. If so, when u click the link in the email, does it ALWAYS send you to a post from a long time ago?
-
does this new z2 have ips screen?
-
^
No it does not -
So be it.
-
Sure. Unfortunately, I have several SATA/Firewire/USB 2.0 external hdds and a sata expresscard. I've been "technologied" out of quality "legacy" stuff one more time.
-
Was thinking about this myself. I have loads of 3.5inch drives hanging around and was wondering about getting some enclosures, or replacing the existing USB 2 / firewire enclosures, but I found this which I think might do the trick. I use those old drives mostly for backing up the media I value on the central NAS, so this seems handy (and you don't need the power adapter for 2.5inch discs).
-
yay us rich folks sharing laughs in Z2 thread
-
Thanks! That USB 3.0 to SATA connector looks look but I'd prefer NOT to remove my SATA HDDs from their enclosures ... so I'll look for a USB 3.0 to SATA port cable. I am sure one will be available.
-
I googled a "USB 3.0 to SATA cable transfer adapter" from a Chinese bulk seller. It'll soon be available at retail, I'm sure.
-
I did, but honestly it is just a reminder for me. I never use the link from the email.

Hi Guys,
First time poster here, just signed up.
I'm going to be ordering a new Vaio Z from the UK online store in the next couple of days (upgrading from my poor VGN-TX1XP with 1GB RAM and 1.2ghz Intel Pentium M Centrino!) and the Sony site says to expect delivery in 2-3 weeks and wondered if anyone had recieved theirs yet and what their first impressions were, what did you like and dislike?
I've opted to order without the PMD as I'm not gonna need it, and i've also opted to go for the full HD 1920x1080 screen as it only costs and extra £40 and will be great for watching full HD content and if I find text to difficult to read, I can change the resolution down to 1600x900. The best of both worlds. I've also upgraded the stock 128gb SSD to a 3rd gen 128gb SSD for only an extra £20.
I am a little concerned over the shallow-ness of the keys though, but I reckon it's gonna be one of those things that you'll just get used to it, and i'm pretty sure Sony would have made sure that their top of line laptop wouldn't be all that bad.
As this is quite a large purchase I would also like to know if anyone knows if there are anyways of getting discounts or cashback rewards, maybe like a student discount or something similar perhaps.
And finally can anyone recommend a nice Sony Vaio Z slip cover?
Here's the spec that I will be buying in the next couple of days:

No one has an official retail version yet. Prototypes have been given to reviewers and are on display at some sony stores. Google some reviews, or read this thread.
Keyboard is one of the Z's "flaws" with 1mm very shallow travel. Like you said, you get used to it and it won't be a problem in a matter of hours.
There is a 5% student discount in US, not sure about UK
There is a leather sleeve and a leather case and a bag fitted to the Z coming out soon. You will have to wait though. Or wait for 3rd party. If you need it now, you can probably get a macbook air sleeve. Or a normal one if you want to fit the sheet batt and/or pmd. (if you change ur mind about buying those)
Also, keep in mind ur ship date will most likely be delayed. I preordered in the US on the very first day and i'm slated for 8/17. Most other countries have slated their ship dates to mid-aug.
The z has a number of flaws (no internal gpu, speakers, keyboard, wqxga, trackpad) but these are relatively minor. Lets be real and realize that there is not a computer in existence that even comes close to matching the Z. So if you can afford it, go for it!
-
Thanks for your encouragement, I think you're right it's very difficult to find that perfect machine that ticks every single box you have and that's probably because it doesn't exist, however for me it ticks most of the boxes.
I shall be ordering later this week, thank you once again, I can't wait. -
Well, there is one major flaw that I noted over in this thread, and it might be worth mentioning again here.
In short, the flaw is based on how you are required to close all programs and press the "Undock" button in order to disconnect the PMD while the main unit is on. One review site tried disconnecting the PMD without undocking it properly, and caused a BSOD. Given that the PMD will not work without the secondary AC adapter plugged into it (as it does not receive power from the main unit), it appears that a sudden power loss (broken fuse/breaker at home, blackout, etc) might similarly cause a BSOD.
It's possible that early drivers were a bit buggy, and that certain circumstances or more mature drivers could help limit crashes to individual apps instead of the whole OS. But given how power outages are out of our control and the risk of data loss from a full BSOD, I'd say that's a significant issue to take into account -- at least for anyone who plans to get the PMD and doesn't have a UPS. -
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Ok...yea. Ur disconnecting an EXTERNAL GPU, not a flash drive. Did you not expect windows to go batsh!t insane when it loses a GPU?
And i don't live in india so my electricity is fine thanks
As for the rare occurence of a blackout, you could buy a battery power surge protector. Or just deal with a BSOD once a year...
All jokes aside, I understand that its a concern but i wouldnt call it a major flaw. -
Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
Agreed, it's like going into my desktop and disconnecting my GPU midsession... i wouldnt want to do that... although it'd be nice if someone could remap one of the assist buttons at top to do the separation sequence... or if Sony added a function specific button to do that or for those without the PMD, for it to do something else... or just build in the GPU and give me a switch
In any case, you all have fun with this, i'll be here sitting on the sidelines... can't afford this on a student budget
-
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Im not sure if i read this post wrong, But it seems like your unaware of the "undock button." There is a button in the connector that goes into the main unit that u have to press, wait a few secs, and then the whtie LED on the connector goes off and then u can safely unplug it. the BSOD only occurs if u dont press the undock button first. -
goldentreesang Notebook Evangelist
Oh and an update, just got another email from sony saying that my order ship date has been moved to 8/17. I already received one that said the same thing though...o.0
-
This undocking issue does seem like a design flaw to me. I would expect this sort of behavior with an aftermarket device like the ViDock but not on an OEM docking station. One of the things I like most about the Z1 Dock is that it is grab and go.
-
Is USB 3.0 not fast enough for.some type of vid-dock? I dont know the answer to this question.
@ ComputerCowboy.. What an american yahoo you are! LOL
Posted proudly from Arizona. One of the last states with balls. -
USB 3.0 could do some sort of DisplayLink I suppose, I mean USB 2 can do it so...
American yahoo? I'm not sure I follow, I am one of the most jaded anti patriotic people you will ever meet. Don't even get me started about False Flag Ops and big government/corporate conspiracies against the american public. I am going to make my millions here then retire to some secluded coca farm in South America. I am a yahoo and I am from America, so perhaps you are right.
I have thought about the PMD issue and I am not sure that I really care. I am leaning towards ordering a Gold Z2 from Conics sans PMD. -
It was a poor stab at sarcasm. I find you very helpful and an asset to these boards.
-
^ Don't worry I am not at all offended. I love the forums, we are all just people with ideas.
-
Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
Yep and a few peeps are complaining about having to press that undock and i'm likening it to detaching your GPU from your motherboard while using it... except... i dunno what'll happen... since your monitor isnt connected to your monitor -
I'm sure it's too early to know this for sure but given current info about the Z2 and prior experience with the Z1 what do you guys expect the cooling to be like?
My CW can get annoyingly hot with fans blowing constantly, I want something super cool and quiet.
