Do any of you guys know if you can take apart a Sony Z and replace the optical drive with a standard hard drive? Would the older tutorial here be the same way you can take apart a new sony Z or how do you think you could get in there?

    http://vaioz.com/opening.html

Or is that a different model? I don't suppose there's a new tutorial out for the new Zs as they just came out.

On another note - I heard you're suppose make a new connector for the hard drive because the Sony Z uses microSATA or uSATA or something like that for their optical drives. There isn't a connector that you can readily purchase now.

And I'm pretty sure the optical (if being replace) it will only accept 9.5mm drives and not 12.5mm?

A HDD only version of the new Z is available, where it replaces the Optical Drive... So all the parts to do it are out there... It's just, can we get hold of them and how much will they be.

If i buy a Z, i need it to have 2 HDDs (SSD + HDD), like my TZ.
If only they'd let you spec the Z that way like they do with the T line and others...

is this becoming a trend whereby optical drives are being pushed out in favour of extra HDD?

Don't know if it's a trend really, but I know it's something I need if I buy a Z or any laptop because it's replacing my desktop. I have quite a bit of media and I rarely use a CD drive, which I think can be said for a lot of people.

I'm trying to decide between an MBP (whenever Apple in their infinite wisdom decides to release the new ones) and the Sony Z. The MBP's hard drive area can be replaced with a 12.5" drive - so the new Western Digital 1TB drives will fit. The optical can be replaced with an SSD - which makes it fast. :)

Not sure if you are aware that the base model of the new Z in Asia (z115) has 500GB but no optical drive? according to some forummers, the reason is that the additional HD took over the empty slot vacated by the optical drive.

I think there really are a lot of people like us nowadays...
I use my external DVD drive probably 10 times a year... And use the extra HDD space, everyday

Can you order one from Asia? I'm in the US.

Does it only just have a non SSD hard drive? I'm not looking to get rid of the SSDs because they're speedier than the platter hard drives. The extra hard drive would be for data.

Sony Style in their respective countries would not ship international.
I think Conics in Japan would.

Z115 comes with only HDD and no optical drive.
Z116 comes with SSD and with optical drive
Z117 with SSD and optical drive.

just check out any sonystyles in HK, MY, AU, or SG.
