    Hello.

    I have a question.

I have wanted a SZ but I wanted broadband and I wasn't going to pay for edge. So in my research I found this page on the sony website.
    http://www.learningcenter.sony.us/N...es/Notebooks/SZSeries/Research/SZFeatures.xml

On this page it says, "Wireless Wide Area Network (WAN)2 Technology
The VAIO® SZ Notebook is more than just portable, it's a truly mobile wireless companion. True mobility is about broad access, just as much as it is about slim, lightweight design. And the VAIO SZ Notebook is taking that access farther than ever before. With integrated wireless WAN2 technology (available only on select models), you can access the Sprint Mobile Broadband network to extend your wireless coverage beyond LAN access networks and hotspots.

So I called sony and the man began to tell me the new models with the sprint broadbroad band and then we got disconnected! So I called back and the new guy had no idea what the sprint was and even insisted the website was wrong. So I ask for a supervisor and the supervisor told me the Sprint was coming but he was not allowed to say when.

So I called again, (just to see what a new guy would say,) and I got the original guy I spoke with and then the phone died again!
So I quess my question is does anyone know about this. I mean it is right on thier website!

Maybe Sony is ditching Cingular ... not a bad idea since EV-DO is faster.

From what I know, the SZ300's will still just have Cingular's EDGE, while the new TXN's will have the EVDO from Sprint. Hopefully we'll see Sony moving the SZ's into Sprint here soon as well...

Also good random news, on the new TXN series, Sony will be providing a cap for those users who choose to take off the WWAN antenna so they won't have a gaping hole! Go Sony.

I would rather have Sprint EVDO PCMCIA card because I have more than one laptop and can switch up.

They changed the site, it no longer says anything about Sprint broadband. Now what, I do not know how long I can wait for a new laptop, I quess I will just tether my evdo phone to a 360....

Actually that's what I'm doing now. But a Sprint Rep let me know I can terminate my phone-as-modem plan without penalty. I may do this if I buy a new laptop and get a PCMCIA card. If that new Sprint WIMAX is two years away a 2 year EVDO contract with Sprint isn't too bad an idea to me.

The Sprint modem would have to support the Rev. A WIMAX a la the Merlin S720. If the built-in doesn't, you can't take advantage of teh speeds.

This is the exact card I just got. I would much rather have the PCMCIA card (I do wish it was an Express slot card - but I'm sure that's just a matter of time). There will always be newer, better cards coming out that enable faster wireless broadband, and I don't want to have to perform brain surgery on my SZ to upgrade the EVDO to the latest version - I'd like to keep my laptop a couple of years this time... :p

Why can't Sony install a wireless hardware that works with all broadband wireless provider? Having a wireless hardware that only works for Sprint is like having a modem that only works for AOL but not Earthlink and Yahoo. I hate it when they try to tie us up like that!

sorry to put the brakes on this fascinating discussion, but will someone do me the favor of pointing me out to a good site where I can educate myself on the different wireless broadband technologies. I'd be very appreciative.

I'm in the market for a new ultraportable laptop and want to make the right purchase.

    thanks in advance.
