Nice find, I wonder if anyone wants to drop $3,400 on a pre-order?

All it is adding is is a larger SSD drive. TZ's with newer graphics cards most likely won't come until summer 08 when the new X3600 (more power efficient then current X3100) along with 45nm ULV processors are released.

    I don't think 48GB is a big improvement over a 32GB SSD.

Instead of waiting for a 48GB SSD, I'd prefer a 32GB SSD + 160 GB HDD, like you can order in Japan.

You can use the SSD for operating system + applications. Most of your data you can keep on the HDD. Even for vista 32GB is enough.

    bytheway I'm selling one ;)

Interesting. I haven't seen any manufacturers offering 48GB drives though?

I'll live with my 32GB and upgrade to 64GB in a year or so.

I wouldn't be able to wait for that extra 12GB SSD
I think the express cards are a good temporary solution till the technology catches up and larger internal SSD are available for more reasonable prices

12GB is not enough, but it does bring up an interesting question, who makes this SSD? Samsung?

That would be a worthy upgrade for the TZ.

The upgrade to 48GB SSD is also worth something. IMO it brings the capacity over the magical lower limit.

Sorry to see at amazon's web site that this model currently only is for shipping within the US.

Are you suggesting using the express cards as a SSD solution? If so please advise as I'm very interested.

TRANSCEND 32GB Solid State Disc, Express Card 34 (TS32GSSD34E) is offered at about 368 Euros (or about 498 USD), and can be placed in the machine's Express Card slot without anything sticking out to give you an extra 32 GB. This can be used as an extra harddisk (SSD) to store data. In addition, from January the SD slot can be filled with a SD Card also of 32 more GB.

I'd be very interested to see what kind of throughput you would get from expresscard in TZ. I would not expect too much from it though.

It would propably be the same if you buy a fast USB key.

As others have noticed and measured, bandwith within TZ is not very high, and any device connected to it eats bandwith from the others.

Can you boot off of an Express card???

If not, it would be of little use to me.

If I was going to pay that much for a SSD Express Card, I would pay a bit extra, sell my existing 32 GB SSD, and then upgrade to a 64 GB one.

Is there a 64GB SSD available for installation into the TZ ?

As noted and as the newbie that I am and will continue to be, I was depending on SSD express card or HCSD or even USB "key" of high capacity. These have trade off as mentioned in previous postings which should be avoided.. something like this I guess ..except for technical aspects of making it fit and work..(I am way too much of a newbie to consider replacing my internal SSD)

If you are prepared to do it yourself, yes.

I don't know where to get it in the states, but this Japanese website lists a 64 GB 1.8" SSD that connects via ZIF: http://www.oliospec.com/miniitx/miniitx_flash.html

It costs 148,000 Yen, which is about $1,300 USD.

The website says that they are meant to be getting stock in September, so I doubt you will see any substantial decrease in price until next year.

None is shipping yet, although one is promised for fall delivery. I don't think you should count on being able to do this yourself. One of our forum members bought the Samsung SSD, had to discard the case to make it fit, and then could not find the right connector, last I read.

Yeah, he didn't get a ZIF drive. He has since brought one that will fit: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=162085

For those who are into model numbers, this is the model number for the Samsung 64GB 1.8" SSD with a ZIF connector: MCBOE64GQAPQ-MWA

...or at least that's what some of the pre-order pages are using.

    Hey folks.

How accurate do ya'll think this 48 gb news is? I mean I'm about ready to buy now but if this is true, then I wouldn't mind waiting a little over a month longer for this.

For those that have ordered or pre-ordered with amazon before, are they usually true to their word. I've tried searching the web but didn't see it mentioned anwhere else.

    Thanks.

Well, if you can find out who is going to be producing those 48 GB drives, then it may well be true.

I am not sure of any of the big names that are going making them. They all seem to be going from 32 to 64.
