I noticed several TZ owners complain of the keyboard touching the screen when the lid is closed and leaving marks on the LCD (happens to mine as well).

I just saw this picture of the new Vaio TZ92 customizable model that just came out in Japan and has two rubber stoppers on the left and right hand side of edge of the keyboard to prevent the screen and keyboard from contact.

Wonder if we'll see that in our American TZ2XX or other international models?

Couldn't you just buy those round dots from an office supply store and cut them to look nice? Would that work?

also consider that that only keeps the edge of the screen panel from contacting the keys, anything that puts pressure against the LCD will cause it to contact the keys (like books in a book bag). i would still put a piece of cloth betweeen the keyboard and lcd every time i close the notebook, like i do now.

The piece of clothe in the middle seems to be a good trick I use that in my FZ sometimes

I do NOT encourage the use of cloth between keyboard and screen. Most cloth fabric contains tiny dust-like "lint" that will settle into the keyboard gaps.

There are 2 approaches to protect the screen from keyboard marks :
    a) Use a LCD screen guard; or
    b) Use a transparent silicon keyboard cover.

    I highly recommend option "b" :
-Full coverage protection against build up of dust, scratches, grease, and dirt.
-Provides light protection against liquid spill on the keyboard.
-Removable and washable. Can be easily cleaned to prevent germ spread.
    -Dampens keyboard sound.
-Maintains natural typing feel, soft on fingers.
-Stays in place and does not shift around.
    -Clearly see through.
-Exact fit for Sony VAIO TZ notebooks.

The above 2 items can be purchaed from Case Depot Express :

Its too bad that Sony doesn't sell an official keyboard skin/cover. But then again, they'd charge $100 for it. ;)

I don't feel comfortable buying from Ebay, wish it was from a more reputable dealer like Newegg.

eBay has both good and rotten sellers.

The above provides an idea for your further research into alternative sellers of similiar products.

I use the plastic-like cover that was originally shipped with the TZ, and which was originally put in between the screen and the keyboard. (I don't quite remember, but I may have cut it a bit, so that it fits the size better, now it goes a bit outside the area.

I think this material is good for the purpose of protecting the screen in an easy way. Any views?

Smart choice. I mentioned "most cloth"; I did not write "ALL cloth". Cheers !

i'll second benjamin's suggestion. i got a cooskin cover off ebay and have been very happy with it. keeps my keys from getting oily, my screen from picking up marks.

i was just going through all the paperwork that came with my TZ and found a little sheet indicating to use the included black vaio branded black screen cleaning cloth to protect the screen from keyboard marks.

Hmm, I just noticed a small dark spot on my TZ's LCD. :(
I guess it was caused by pressure from it being in my backpack as I took it with me to school today? I kept it in a separate compartment with the AC adapter away from my books, only thing that would have pushed on it was the adapter. I'd better get a separate carrying case for it now. :(

EDIT: Here's a quick pic I took with my cellphone.

That is true many types of cloth will shed like this. However the micro fiber cloths do not exhibit this behavior and make an inexpensive alternative to the silicon covers and the like. They also have a nice secondary use of being a safe wipe for the LCD screen.

If you buy a microfiber cloth from one of the computer supply folks they are a bit pricey. Someone recommended looking for them in the automotive department at Target or other retailers. I checked Target and sure enough I found a two pack of grey ones for about $5. They were EXACTLY the same width as my Sony FZ and the grey color is very close to the color of the machine! Woot. It is about three inches longer front to back, but I close the lid and fold the excess over the top. It actually helps keep the cloth in place. It never slides around and I transport my laptop to and from my office every day.

I know I have recommended the microfiber towels from Target's automotive department. That's exactly what I use. I cut mine down to the right size with pinking shears (the zigzag scissors).

I just use a piece of plain white paper, its pretty effective in preventing scratches.
