Wireless LAN N? What about using it in Europe? (I am perhaps a bit ignorant!) In other words: Is there any point of ordering a TZ with this feature to be used in Europe, Norway?

Of course, It is not country-based service. It brings you up to 300mbps through wireless network (around 130mbps in real) = great improvement over the Wireless G which is really slow. But for Wireless N you need to have some N accespoint/router etc to be able to use it.

Nice list of weaknesses. None are dealkillers, and I don't believe that Sony had enough time between the June and September launches to address any of these issues, so I'm sure the new models will have the same deficiencies. We'll have to wait until the third 'refresh' in January for some of these shortcomings to be addressed. :D

I agree with most but I never had a problem on my TZ with lightleakage and fan.

Light leakage: Only on a completly dark screen there was some more light on the bottom. I think it's normal for W-led, as every W-led I've seen has it.

Fan: I was running XP and RMclock. 95% of the time there was no fan noise.

    Same here,

No Light leakage or annoying fan...Is the most silent laptop I had ever owned. Maybe depends on the specs, the combo SSD+HDD will be more noisy than the other models.
I think the most important issue about the new TZ to know is if the built in WWAN will work in US or Europe...Hopefully someone will test it asap so we all know :)

My SSD and 160GB has the fan on far more than the DVD model did. I would prefer an SSD/DVD model for that reason.

What do you think guys about the next update of the TZ? If now they refresh the storage with bigger capacity,to the next model maybe Sony will change te CPU or the RAM? Or even better the poor graphic card? :)

It was just a joke - do you see that yellow rounded face at the end?

Next TZ should be on Santa Rosa, with X3100 and loaded with some ULV 45nm Penryn with TDP around 4W ;)

Has anyone noticed that the refreshed price for the TZ91 over the TZ90 on pricejapan has jumped up to €1600. I was waiting for the refresh before ordering and now I feel like an idiot. Anybody know why this might be so, am I missing somehting. Maybe Sony will do a reverse of the iphone and come knocking on the doors of the early adopters with a hatchett demanding more money to make the slower of us feel better.

Well anyways congrats to the early ones but does anyone know what the bluetooth headset is thats in the options menu on the sonystyle site. I need something uber-shiny to make myself feel beter about the price-hike.

Also can anyone from Europe who ordered from conics say how much they paid in postage cause the conics EMS price to Ireland of €154 seems a bit steep compared to pricejapan at €55. I want it delivered but I dont need them to hire a bodyguard to deliver it or anything.

yeah like jurka said it was a joke.

the way the TZ is desgined they are not going to have full powered CPU's and GPU's.

Yes, is strange this price. Conics with EMS ship to Italy and other european countries that I know(Sweden) for 52 euro. So, I don't from where came from.
About the pricejapan...well is logic that the TZ91 cost more, it has the double storage of SSD and the WWAN built-in.

you could can still go for the old type. the retail version will be on sale propably.

Pricejapan will ship anything to you.

G1 is also very cheap now.

Thanks for all the responses. I have mailed both Conics and Pricejapan regards delivery costs and availibility of the older model respectively. Its late night in Japna right now so ill just have to wait with fingers crossed. The one thing is though with the increased price of the TZ-91 on Pricejapan there is now an even greater reason to go with Conics as they are only about €70 higher and from what everyone here has said their service is excellent.

if the price difference is only 70$ i would go for conics.

but i think if you choose a lot of options the price difference will get bigger.

i'm not sure if they'll refresh it with the 45nm processor, seeing as it took a while for a dual core ulv cpu. if anything they'll wait for the 32nm one

Keep in mind that the cost of going from a 32GB SSD to 64 is huge right now. It is a substantial premium, so the extra cost is expected. At least more vendors now are offering the option of SSD albeit its still very expensive.

I've never had any major problems with light leakage on the TZ. Understand that no matter what LCD screen you have, you will have light leakage, its just how big or small.

I have very little light leakage. I actually like it I think it has something to do with the incredible brightness of this screen. I love it. (tz191)

What do you mean by 45nm and 32nm?

45nm or 32nm - it is size of transistors used to built processor (very simplified). nm is abbreviation of nanometer unit. You can understand, that the less size of transistor is, the more transistors can be used for core of CPU = CPU at the same size would be more powerfull than its predecessor, or will have better efficiency/power consumption. Today Core2Duo has 300 000 000 of them and even more. I hope it is correct (at least something of it).

I think that both of those new laptops look really good. I really like the looks of the white one but i don't think that i could get on with a 11.1 screen. I think that i could go no lower than 12.1. It is a pity that Sony does not put more effort into the G series.

If i ever wanted to import the lack of an English OS if a bit off putting as well.

Been awhile since I've bee on here and even though I got my G1 back in May, I'm seriously considering the G2 or even the TZ91 as they are definite upgrades. My G1 has the 32GB SSD and having that extra 32GB would be very handy.

The G has been the most usable ultraportable to date that I've owned. That 10th Anniversary TZ looks great and despite its price, is decent value (you get all 3 batteries). However, I'm not sure I want an extra 1/2 pound in weight and slightly bigger size. Even with my external 200GB 7200rpm drive, I'm still under 2.5lbs with the G.

    Oy.

You going to give me the $4k? lol Otherwise, the G2 is on the backburner for a bit until the money train rolls in.

Unless someone takes my G1 off my hands to help fund it. The good thing about Dynamism is that the warranty transfers (I have the optional 3 year wide warranty, too).

"Any of you guys manage to learn if the WWAN of these japanese TZ91 is workable in Europe or US?"

I asked Dynamism and Conics - both said it wouldn't work.....apparently the WWAN software is tied in to a serivce provider in Japan and can't be unlocked. You can't get the US WWAN to work in Europe for the same reason.

I was a bit peaved by this too - but I guess its understandable. A shame though, coz I'm just about to order my TZ from conics and I'm in the UK.

I could be mistaken but I think this is due to more than just software. The standards are different (Japan is, of course, way ahead and Europe uses different frequencies).

Congrats for buying the best laptop ;)

I dont want to be a messenger of bad news, but what I found I would suggest that WWAN wont work. And as you have customized TZ you had to order from Japan.
    What google translated:
you need to sign a contract at NTT DoCoMo provider - look at the bottom
DoCoMo uses FOMA network at 2Ghz (i didnt hear FOMA is working from outside Japan)
I havent found if the adapter is working at GSM/UMTS network, so I cant say it WONT work..

I wish you the WWAN module isnt locked to DoCoMo and is working at UMTS/HSDPA frquencies

I think the refresh of January will definitely have the WWAN built-in for all, and not only for Japan. The frequencies are exactly the same, is not this the issue.

It took me 48 hours to decide to risk trying the WWAN, and I finally took the decision. I am just v. curious to see exactly what the issues will be. I hope it is mini express PCI, so at least I can swap it....

I did not want to regret not ordering it if it works

+ I can give an answer to the as yet unanswered question ;-)

Just a quick question, if anybody knows the answer.

One of the big reasons I decided to upgrade from the TZ90 is that I think (more like hope) that the 64gb SSD will be much faster in terms of read/write spead than the 32GB SSD

That way, it will in all performance criteria, supersede a conventional hard disk

Has anybody come across a review of a 64gb 1.8" SSD?

That is some mighty powerful specs you got there. Such a tiny little machine with so much storage is unheard of just a couple of years ago!

Yes, unfortunately it will not work in the U.S. DoCoMo uses a proprietary interpretation of Qualcomm's W-CDMA standard. Usually, W-CDMA is compatible with Sprint and Verizon, but not in this particular case, which is why DoCoMo licenses its technology:

    http://www.nttdocomo.com/technologies/present/fomatechnology/index02.html

While DoCoMo is now selling HTC FOMA-based phones that has a GSM radio for roaming that WWAN module doesn't have it because it's not assumed the lappy will roam. :(

Of course, I could be totally wrong, so let's keep hoping, because I want a Japanese version with WWAN! :D

Q: Conics.net have 3 year "wide" warranty. Is that international warranty? I wouldn't like to send my laptop over to Sony in Japan in case something happens. Plus...I wouldn't like my new little, fragile and expensive toy to go to the other side after a year and a day...

i was looking at the tz91 or g2. I live in the US. So neither of these will work with mobile broadband in the US? I have the plug in verizon card. If so, I will have to get the TZ 100 series. I was hoping for a bigger screen. :( Any opinons on the TZ 170 or 190?

Bigger screen? In an ultraportable? You're kidding, right?

    The G never had a built-in modem.

And I'm surprised people are surprised internal modem cards are locked to a specific carrier in a country. It's that way in Europe and America, so why not Japan? Unless you buy your own unlocked card and replace what's in there, it's not going to work here.

I use the Cingular PCMCIA 3G card with my Vaio G1 just fine. So if you have the older style PCMCIA card, I'd say go with a G. If you have an expresscard, go with TZ.
