I was just browsing the bestbuy website and found this...

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9171521&type=product&id=1218043604946

Its called the V610Y/B buts its definitely a Z series based on the specifications that are listed. It comes with:
P8600 Core 2 Duo processor (what ghz is that one?)
    1366 x 768 screen
    320 GB 7200 harddrive
    4gb ram
    DVD RW drive
Windows Vista Home 64 bit with XP downgrade

all for 1899. that sounds pretty decent except that I wanted the 1600 x 900 screen size.

Nice find. It must be a Z cuz there is no such thing as a V afaik. Hopefully we'll be able to CTO on SonyStyle soon.

I had a chance to play around with that model yesterday. I wasn't expecting them to have one on display because the site didn't even acknowledge that they sold them in that store (La Crosse, WI). I was surprised to see it sitting out and not in one of those restraints. I was at the Coralville, IA store and they put it in a cage so I was unable to pick it up or close it. But, I was finally able to pick it up and examine all of its beauty. It was very light (without the battery) and compact. I exited the demo mode to take a look at the 1366x768 screen and it really is nice. I wouldn't mind that screen at all, but I got the 1600x900. I hear what you're saying about the higher res screen; it is hard to resist that option. I'm excited to see how it looks! It'll be here on Friday!

If you can find the Z650NB it has similar specs and is priced about the same (mine was a couple of dollars cheaper and no tax or shipping charges from Portable One = BIG savings and much more approachable customer service). That model does have the 1600x900 screen and a faster processor (2.53GHz as opposed to the 2.4GHz). It is a fantastic deal if you are in the market for a Vaio Z. And it comes with a free neoprene sleeve, which is the one accessory that I would buy from Sony for this (with the exception of a larger battery, but probably only if I was doing a CTO). It's like a calling. ;) It probably comes with Vista Business, though. I don't think that will be an issue.

I'm curious if the Z610YB at Best Buy has 128MB of VRAM with the dedicated card or the 256MB that the newer renditions feature. The specs on the site don't really provide any clues.

I owned it for a bit ... it was a very nice machine for the price (P8600, 7200rpm hard drive). It was my "get me through" computer while my Z90 was in Japan being repaired. I prefer the 1366x768 screen myself, so I'd recomment it wholeheartedly.

I've it, It's awesome even it's 64-bit OS. I snapped it in "Like New" on eBay for $900 :)

I'm sorry, but this is a HORRIBLE deal unless you specifically want the low res screen. A z690 configured to those specs is only $50 more!!

You guys are exploding like this is the deal of the century but it blows. If you apply student discount at sonystyle you save even more.

Higher res screen + double the graphics ram = worth $50? I think so

If you like the higher res, sure. I had a higher rez Z and hated the screen. Changing DPI didn't help. For me, 1366x768 was where it was at. So different strokes for different folks.
