scariss, I do agree at some point, but usually costs cuts with quantaty..and I cant imagine quantaty of carbon fiber goes rapidly up in future...since this laptops do not sell as much as the mainstream ones made of plastic.

Anyhow...as to the mp3 player...almost everybody owns a mp3 player and will probably buy a new one in a year or two...some even have more...so its more economy to invest into a long term profit, rather then a short term. Meaning cutting the cost down, maybe sell with lower profit, to gain profit later one..when selling bigger quantaty...

I feel this hard to happen with sony vaio laptops, maybe to asus eee ...

But then again...lets hope they cut prices for around 10%, which would be just fine.

Guys, I just saw a trailer (movie preview) for Will Farrell's new movie, The Stepbrothers, and I noticed a scene where they were showing a couple using a Sony Laptop. The scene was very quick. Since this movie is Sony Pictures, you think they advertised the Z. Movies by Sony Pictures are a form of advertisement for Sony Products.

I recall watching a James Bond movie, and the laptops, desktops, and monitors used in this particular move were all Sony products.

Just an idea to get a glimpse of the Z.

I tried googling it but no luck.

Nope. It's a SZ, complete with WAN module.
Personally, I would have gone with the carbon fiber option myself.

I only wonder what the housing will be made of...but I guess it wont be carbon...or?

Yep, That's the Scene (LOL!) Like I said it was quick when they showed it, but enough to see that Vaio laptop. I knew I can reply on someone to get that info. Thanks.

It does look big for an SZ, but maybe it had to be oversized to advertise the "VAIO" name.

I don´t think so, too. The notebook is too cheap for a carbon case. If you look at the pictures on the front page, it seems to be a plastic case with magnesium finish like the CR series oder actual FZ series.

    Question?

With the Blu-Ray drives, reader & writer, can you still use the older DVD +/- R, -CD, to WRITE on these Blu-Ray Drive? Or are they completely obsolete? And will the drive detect automatically which media type your using whether it be Blu-Ray +/-R, RW or DVD/CD +/- R, RW?

If the units will not have carbon fibre, there is no reason why they then should be made to cost more than the competition or at least not priced within the range of the competition.

The price range for SR is probably from 1200$ to 1500$. If you compare that to the current prices of Dell XPS 1330, I think SR is priced very competitive.

US and Canadian prices vary, and I hope they are more in line with the US prices due to dollar parity. 13.3 inches is a bit small for me, I am curious to how the FW will size up, I am not a fan of ati video cards, and if the specs as mentioned here

    http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/26/upcoming-amd-radeon-hd-3450-3470-and-3650-low-enders-leaked/

are true, I don't think a vaio is what I want.

but if what is mentioned here:
    http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/ati_hd_3470/

that they are for hi def video, perhaps the FW really won't be too great for gaming.
Sony could have at least added some good nvidia cards as options as well, I will pay extra for nvidia if I have to. perhaps I'll have to check out some other companies for a laptop.

edit, for some reason the FZ seems to have disappeared from the canadian sonystyle website and now only available via the customize section only.

Per the user manual, the Blu-ray drives (both reader/combo and burners) are completely backwards compatible with all DVD & CD media R & W and +/-. The BD burners are compatible with BD-R (Blu-ray Disc-Recordable) version 1.1 but not 1.0...whatever that was, and BD-RE (Blu-ray Disc-Rewritable) version 2.1. Bottom line is the burners can create 25GB single layer and 50GB dual layer discs. I think we can expect the best Blu-ray solutions from Sony.

ascariss, I think gaming is the last thing on Sony's mind...the FW seems squarely positioned as a Blu-ray laptop....bigger 16.4" screen, 16:9 aspect ratio, 1600x900 res, HDMI port, video card geared for HD, BD drives in a lot of the preconfigured models.

While this has nothing to do with the Sony VAIO's, I can't think of anywhere else to post this. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to have a Forum just for New and Upcoming Hardware. Instead of having rumors and pictures scattered across the site, why not just have one forum full of all the expected new computers. This would be particularly helpful for someone like myself who wants to wait for the new Montevina (Centrino 2) platform to come out but isn't sure what computers are coming out. So maybe this would fit as an addition to the "Which Notebook is Right for Me" forum. I'm new to posting on the board though and am not sure how to do all of this.

Here are some of the new computers coming out that I've been watching. Just thought it would be nice to be able to see everything in one forum is all; New Macbook, New Envy 133, New Sony Vaio's, any news on an update to the XPS line, and also the new Lenovo's.

The ATI 3470 isn't all that great for gaming. However the ATI 3650 seems to be pretty good. its more powerfull that the nVidia 8600 GT, but slower than the 8700 GT. according to this thread, that is:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=249093

The ATI drives are all a improvement on 8400 GT, and both of them support DivX 10 and so on for hd viewing.

FW isn't meant to be a gaming powerhouse, but it'll work pretty well with the 3650 on most games. And i guess for high end games you stick to medium quality over high. after all the 8600 GT was good enough for most gamers.

    Nice find!:)
Did they mention anything better in terms of the GPU options? Something better than the HD 3650 256MB, like the HD3850 512MB?
Wasn't the price of the most expensive FW series model €1770?

well at least the FW is using the TZ keyboard so my sister won't complain anymore about not liking the FZ,AR,SZ keyboard.

anyone know if the FW has backlit keyboard and biometric options? not that they're essential, just wanted to know.

probably just a method to lower the costs. ATIs are cheaper then nVidias. the quality should go up in most cases since we comparing newer ATIs to older nVidias.

Looking at the current issues of Nvidia you could also say the opposite.

By the way, Z series has Nvidia.

    1. They don´t mention anything better in terms of the GPU option.

    2. The best graphics card in the FW series will the ATI HD 3650 256MG.

    3. There will be no ATI HD 3850 graphics cards available for the FW series.

    4. Yes, the VGN-FW11ZU is the most expensive model in Europe. The price should be 1770 €, but it isn´t. The actual pricing will be 1660,- €.

    There are issues with Nvidia?

So, the "mainstream" goes ATI to cut costs, but the "pro" line stays Nvidia..I like this :)

yea ATI offers pretty much the same power for HD playback as it's nVidia counterparts. nVidia's more preferred for hardcore gaming and has better higher end GPUs.

yes, ATI has "ATI Avivo HD Video" for HD playback as well as PowerPlay (which is called PowerMizer in Nvidia). My personal opinion is that ATI runs a bit cooler which is good for notebook (especially subnotebooks), on the other hand Nvidia is kind of better for games. At the end it's pretty similar kind of Mercedes vs BMW :)

    Thanks for the update!
It's too bad the highest GPU option will only be an ATI HD3650 256MB.
How does the HD3650 compare to the 9600GT? (Acer 6920 Gemstone Blue has a 9600GT!)
It's also good news to hear that the price will be a bit lower than initially thought. :)

The HD 3650 and the 9600M GT are direct competitors, and based on how ATI has been doing relative to Nvidia lately, it will likely perform better, and will almost definitely have a better power to watt ratio.

I really hope that the Z won't be disappointing. The US photos are nice, but has obviously been photoshopped - that's why the SR photos look good), but the China SR are actual photos w/o photo enhancement (prototype or not), if this is what the SR is going to look like, I am not interested. It's as cheap looking as the CR.

I can see now why some of you saw this model as the replacement for the CR and it makes more sense to me as to the affordability (pricing listed on the first page of this thread) of this model.

    Now let's see the Z!!!

This pic does not match keyboard style that we see in Circuit City pics. Those show both SR & FW with keyboard like Macbook Air. Also, hinge is different. I don't think these are SR series.

This looks very very close. However, the right side is missing ethernet and modem ports (something odd is there instead) and on the left side near front in last photo, there is mini-RCA jack where the firewire port should be.

Sorry to disagree. The Circuit City pics of SR are very sleek and minimalist...a welcome relief from all the useless glitz and gloss from other manfacturers (namely HP, Toshiba, Dell's new Studio). We haven't seen photos of final product yet (Chinese web site photos appear to be either prototype or bogus).

On second look, this does pretty much match the manual (except for firewire port). And I agree this is ugly. Looks like it was taken with a cell phone camera!! And pink version of all choices!! Ugh, I'll bet Sony marketing didn't plan this leak.

I'm holding out hope that final product in conservative color will look awesome.

The dutch website said there would a silver version of SR. But it did not say anything of pink lid!

On the good side, it looks a lot thinner than the previous pictures.
