I'm looking for a new laptop, and I'd love good build quality and design, but also require a 1080p screen (looking for a 14-15" chassis), as much graphics power is possible, and good battery life.
One potential contender is the Vaio S 15", as it's got the design, screen, and battery life, I've heard. I've heard, however, that its fans are loud under load, and that its thermals aren't great, thus necessitating a rather weak 640M LE.

On the other hand, the ASUS N56VZ has decent but not all that exciting design and build quality, an ok screen but doesn't seem to be IPS, and worse battery life. However, its thermals seem to be better, allowing for a 650M, and I haven't heard anything bad about loud operation.

What are your perspectives? Is anyone else looking for a laptop like the S 15 but disappointed by the 640M LE?
Does anyone own one of the new S 15", and want to tell us if they fixed the venting issues previously present?

Bad Time - if youre looking for a sony laptop with a good gpu youre g

Sorry had to post that :p the laptop was just released so I doubt many people own one, best to go and see one at your local sony store if you can.

the S is quite thin for what it packs and the fact is heats up and is loud is price to pay for the thin design. Personally the card is good midrange gpu and honestly most people do not need anything better. If you want some something for gaming, don't look at sony if you want above average graphics.

as posted here http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/660415-first-look-new-2012-sb-series-s13-20.html#post8581585 the 640M LE is kepler which is nice

I just need something to be able to play games at livable settings at native res. I'm not much of a gamer, but I do play the occasional game or two.

It's good to know that it's the kepler version, though, not the Fermi one.

I wish I could head down to my local sony store, but I live in Montana. The closest I have is a Best Buy which is 250 miles away...
Hoping somebody here can give me a second-hand perspective, which is better than none...

EDIT:Also, does anyone who owns a current one know if Quad-core vs dual-core has a significant impact upon battery life? I would assume so, but good to have impressions from real owners...

Configure it with an SSD. That'll reduce the heat and noise and improve longevity, not to mention the dramatic speed boost.

^ and a dramatic price boost as well :D
do not configure with SSD; get the regular HDD and buy your own SSD.
