New Vaio S with 8th gen CPUs?

Anyone buying this one or interested in it? For $1200, 8th gen Core i5 and they supposedly boost the clockspeed a little higher.. its not a bad deal. Also a full size ethernet port and VGA port in an ultrabook that weighs 2.3lbs.. in 2018! I guess thats a huge plus for business users but no T3 :/ its got old ports but a modern design interestingly. Competes with the X1 Carbon, Macbook Pro, XPS 13, etc

 

Its a worse culprit than the HPs with that screen/keyboard lift. Its an issue if you want to use it on your lap. From experience with one of these types of machines, it either digs in uncomfortably; or any movement of you lap can push the lid forward.

Also if you wish to use the screen at any angle other than the full open position, it can close on your hands.

Otherwise it has good build quality, and probably same performance as Lenovo X1, HP Spectre 13, and Dell XPS 13 competition (they all throttle under sustained load down to the same numbers).

 

If only they had a higher resolution. Reminds me of my old Z21.

Interesting. Not sold in the UK. Think that Sony may need to win back some of their customers.

 

Sony doesn't have anything to do with Vaio since they liquidated it in 2014.

They are much smaller now, and don't have the production to back worldwide sales. They will likely target Japan, US, and East Asia.

 

Yes, i'm aware that Sony sold of the Vaio brand.The laptops appeared to disappear altogether though for a few years. It seems that they made a re-entry some time ago and i missed this. I've been away from home for a long time and stopped following Sony as closely. I still interchange both in my mind Sony/Vaio knowing what i mean. Looked at the specs. I think i would miss the WWAN a little, although with hotspots etc it's not a necessity i still think it's a nice touch and have had to use it numerous times recently in places with no wifi and not wanting to exhaust the data on my phone.

 

The port selection has me mildly interested, as it's better targeted to the ports I would make use of than most of what's available today, not having adopted anything USB Type C yet, occasionally using Ethernet on my laptop to speed up transfers, and having a spare VGA port on my monitor but not a spare HDMI port. But upgradeability, like for most laptops, would be a question. I wouldn't want to spend $1K maxing out the memory and SSD today, but I probably would want to upgrade them eventually.

To be fair, a lot of ultrabooks on the market these days especially ones as thin and light as the Vaio S come with soldered RAM
