I just got my Vaio SA today--I was wondering what I should/can do with the fresh laptop. I got it from the Microsoft Store so the install is relatively clean because of Microsoft Signature.

Are there any drivers I need to install? Optimizations or fixes to take care of? System restore points or other backups recommended?

And is there anything to be done about the looseness of the hinge? (other than being careful)

Are there applications to control your battery charge (e.g. no higher than 80-90%) so as to extend battery life?

I feel like some of these questions were in larger threads but I simply couldn't find the answers in them. But if a question is best answered by such a thread go ahead and link me :)

My first non-Hand-Me-Down laptop. And what a laptop it is!

To date sony has not released a wave of new drivers for the SA. Factory installed ones will be current, at least for the moment. System restore will be enabled by default so you shouldn't have to worry about that, but if you wish you may be wise to create one with this fresh install as it would allow you to correct any mistakes you might make / software errors.

The hinge is what it is, loose. There isn't anything to do as the mechanism is well hidden within the body of the laptop. Just be gentle, everything will be alright.

There is a battery care function provided by vaio. Option to keep battery at either 50% or 80% max charge. ( Found in the Vaio Care application)

Hope that is of some help! Feel free to ask more.

About the hinge - I've noticed that my right hand side hinge is loose, because I used to open the lid with my right hand. It is possible that scrupulously remembering to open the lid from the center (where the trackpad is) instead of from one side, will reduce the chances of one of the hinges working loose.

Do make a set of recovery disks and keep them some place safe. If you lose the recovery partition on your hard drive, you will need them to do a system recovery. It will cost you 3 blank DVDR disks - well worth it IMHO.
