    Hello everyone!

Does anybody know whether is it possible to drive either 2560x1600 or 2560x1440 external monitor with Core-i5 Sony Z HDMI output or docking station?

Is there any information about previous models as well?

If it is like the current Vaio Z notebook series, I do not think it will when using the HDMI output or the docking station's DVI output. :(

Furthermore, I don't think it will based on the following specs listed by Sony, which states a "Max. External Display Resolution via HDMI" of " 1920x1080." However, there is a "Max. External Resolution via VGA" of " 2048x1536."

If it ever gets display port it might have a chance of hitting that resolution.

Yep, I believe display-port or dual-link DVI like Apple's implementation is the only current standard that can handle that kind of bandwidth.

Note that you can indeed support 1920 x 1200 resolution through either HDMI or DVI on the docking station.

I have not tried anything higher.

HDMI 1.3 maybe (Wikipedia says 2560x1600x60Hz 30bit color is supported)
HDMI 1.4 supports up to ~4000x2000

I've checked the specs for the nvidia geforce gt 330m gpu that comes with the new Vaio Z and it says that the maximum digital resolution it supports is 2560x1600. so why are people saying the HDMI output on the Vaio Z does not support the 2560x1600 resolution?

Just because the GPU supports it doesn't mean the notebook comes with the ports necessary to output it. The same spec page lists support for dual-link DVI and DisplayPort for the GT 330M. Perhaps it needs one of those two output interfaces to support 2560x1600.

Does anyone know if you could have 2 hdmi feeds going when using the docking station? One from the docking station and one from the unit itself?

The docking station does not have an HDMI port - just DVI. When the machine is in the docking station the onboard HDMI port is disabled.

HDMI 1.3 has more bandwidth than dual-link DVI, it depending on how the thing is wired it could just work with HDMI.

HDMI 1.3 supports higher bandwidth due to doubled frequency therefore not directly compatible with DVI.
I haven't seen either HDMI 1.3 to Dual-link DVI adapter or 1.3 compatible device yet.

Good point, but a screen like the Dell U2711 has also HDMI input, so with HDMI 1.3 on both sides it might work ?

Question about HDMI on new Z...

I am planing to use Z with my HD projector. Since projector doesn't use audio coming from HDMI I wonder if it's possible to configure Z to output audio to internal speakers or through headphones when HDMI is used.

Yes, you can do that in the control panel of Windows 7. You'll see the HDMI as an audio device as well but you can change it so you can have the audio out of the speakers from the Z for instance.

Has anyone verified if we can have two external monitors that way?

Just tried dual link dvi and 30" monitor with sony docking station (the new style sony vpcz1) and no go. Suprisingly only shows 1920x1080 not even 1920x1200.. Sigh.. Stupid sony, almost had it with the nice laptop.

So the docking station is useless if I have a 1920x1200 monitor??
    (Or use VGA?)

But I can/have to use the HDMI on the laptop?

I would like to use the laptop screen and external monitor at the same time.

(That would mean the docking station is only usable for power and USB ports for me. Not even audio, but than again, I can connect USB to my amplifier).

Docking station DVI connector supports 1920x1200 perfectly.

It cannot support 2560x1600 resolution, as this one requires dual-link DVI, and Sony decided to spare some $$$ by using single-link DVI electronics.

    Colleagues,

How do you setting up 1920x1200 resolution on external monitor via HDMI? I have maximum resolution 1080p with NVidia and VAIO Control Center's. If I use analog one - I reach 1920 x 1200 on my Samsung 245t with strong dazzle.

    Guys,

Please, help me, I couldn't solve this problem without you.

How do you reach 1920 x 1200 resolution using the HDMI output? I couldn't set such a resolution nor with Window tools neither with VAIO Control Panel (screenshot in attachment, it's on russian :). VAIO control panel even doesn't have such an option to choose.

    Don't use that silly thing!

Right Click on an empty area of your desktop
    click "Screen Resolution"
click on the display you want to use
then use the resolution slider/combo box to select 1920x1200 (WUXGA)

    Sure, I tried. :-(
There is no option to set 1920x1200.

P.S. Look at the attachment. And, as you could see, there is an awful quality of picture. I don't know why.

What display drivers are you using? Are you in Speed mode?

I can run a 1920x1200 monitor of HDMI or DVI on the dock when I am in speed mode, but I am using the BIOS Hack and the latest nVidia/Intel drivers.

You should be able to get this to work with the hybrid drivers, but I haven't used those for a long time.

    what about this...
when you are on the resolution screen like it shows in your picture
    click advaced settings
    then click the monitor tab
then uncheck hide modes that this monitor cannot display
hit ok then see if you can select your resolution

    1. Are you SURE that your monotor can handle 1920x1200? If you are sure, then in Windows display properties, click advanced, then uncheck 'hide resolutions that this monitor cannot display'.

    2. Avoid setting the external monitor as your primary display, at least until you're done messing around with custom resolutions. Set it as the secondary display, so you can adjust settings from the LCD panel in your laptop.

like ComputerCowboy mentioned, make sure you're in Speed mode... then try this:

Right click on desktop -> Nvidia Control Panel -> under Display tab, select Change Resolution

In the Resolution Pane, does it have 1920x1200? If not, click the Customize button then select Create Custom Resolution. I'm using a community modded driver 263.14 (8.17.12.6314) though so you might not see this... (also, i don't have a 1920x1200 monitor to see if this will work, but it sounds like it should)

Now I'm using the last version of combo-graphic driver pack, but previously I also tried with the Sony driver.

Sure, I'm in Speed mode. Monitor exactly handles 1920x1200.

Folks, I don't know the way I haven't tried. Hidden resolutions, customs with the NVidia Control panel and other things. Nothing works.

Then I looked for Samsung 245t issues and found something interesting. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3028654?start=0&tstart=0 I have absolutely the same problems. Looks like the specific of my dislplay's HDMI is to blame.

Do you know any utils for such a problem?

^Well it seems your answer is in the very thread you linked (use a HDMI to DVI cable)

"Issue is solved. Instead of using HDMI-HDMI cable I am using the HDMI-DVI adapter from the box with a DVI-DVI cable and resolution is 1920x1200 finally. I uninstalled SRX, it is not necessary anymore. It showed Syncmaster display (Vendor ID: SAM-2C2D, Product ID: 2F5).

Anyway I do not understand why HDMI-HDMI connection detects SAMSUNG as display and selects 1080i only."
