So this new Intel Rapid Storage supposedly images your Drive onto an external drive... Doesn't this accomplish the same thing as Windows7 backup utility?

    Which should I use?

If your ssd is capable of TRIM do not touch rapid storage and dont use the Intel AHCI driver as TRIM ONLY works with the standard MS AHCI driver and none else.

Personally, I had a significant performance drop playing with Intel Rapid Storage Drivers.

This post seems a bit confusing, at least after the response. Intel Rapid Storage Technology is the "new" version of Intel Matrix Storage drivers, and one of the two is required if you run your hard drives in RAID mode.

Since the new Z comes by default in RAID 0 mode and is currently incapable of switching to IDE/AHCI mode, you're pretty much forced to use them and can't use the MS AHCI driver. Which means no trim, but that's a matter already being discussed in numerous threads.

Now is the OP talking about the Intel Rapid Recover component? If so, see http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/cs-026142.htm for some information; it seems to be a more sophisticated backup system that integrates a kind of on-demand RAID 1.

The Z comes with "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" utility installed. If I click on it it tells me all about my drives. Why are you warning us not to run it?

I'm interested in this too - I definitely want trim! I formatted my computer with 7 pro and installed all the sony drivers including some Intel things. Which drivers should I roll back?

I'm not sure that Les got the gist of the original question, or at least not the realities of the new Z's SSD system.

my mistake, yes the intel app does control my 2 x 128GB SSD and does not offer a backup solution
