Is it possible to run WQXGA with the new Z?
It's mind boggling that Sony doesn't support this. I currently have z13 wiht vidock but looking to update if it's possible to use the PMD on the new Z to continue to use my monitors.
Thanks

http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...ithout-vidock-works-but-i-need-some-help.html <- I think you can try this. Also, you could try do a custom resolution in the Nvidia Control Panel if you have some newer drivers installed.

PMD is advertised to support up to 2 separate displays. However, it's even possible to run a 2560x1440 display directly from the laptop with the integrated Intel video card by modifying the sync settings and similar: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/602724-success-2560x1440-support-new-vpc-z2-dell-u2711.html
You will likely have tor reduce the refresh rate even further for 2560x1600 though.
I suppose PMD supports these resolutions out of the box. -
Thanks for the replies
Can someone else confirm the PMD supports this resolution? I remember the last time I checked the PMD only supports full hd as max resolution. It doesn't even have dvi or display port. Is that not the case anymore?
As for doing it directly from the laptop, it's too much of a hassle and the refresh rate is not great. I currently run two wqxga screens and one full hd through vidock and the system is stable. I would like to replicate that with the new Z. -
Bump... Anyone?

It doesn't. And the new one won't either. For AMD, only their 28nm chips support 2560x1xxx@60Hz via HDMI. For Intel, only their Ivy Bridge chips, for nVidia, only their 28nm chips.
Not only that, I'm not sure about monitors with 2560x1xxx resolution and HDMI even support that from the HDMI input.
The only way 2560x1xxx support was "aquired" from the HDMI output in the first place, was due to a bit of reclocking and modifying the Intel HDMI output with a specific software tool. Even so, it didn't exactly work completely (only at 40Hz, HDMI inputs of big Dell monitors do not work, must use DVI). -

HDMI 1.4a supports that resolution.

Thanks Jeremy
So basically the new Z cannot do what my two years old can do (with the help of vidock) as the new Z cannot be used with a vidock because of the proprietary thunderbolt implementation.
Way to go sony, you've just lost another customer.
What do you guys suggest as an alternative for the Z? basically I need a light and powerful machine with possiblity to attach two WQXGA machine either natively or using an external gfx setup. -
That being said, amd/nvidia 28nm only, and intel ivy bridge only, for hdmi support of nice, lovely resolutions.
As for thin and lights with power, I'd ask the DIY vidock thread.
