and driving me nuts, thoughts?

I think you have a few options...
1. Get used to it.
2. Try tap-click instead.
3. Use an external mouse.
4. Return your Z. -
prettty much what i needed to know. I just wanted to make sure i was not doing something artarded.
5. the whole pad itself is a clicker but does take more energy to actuate. -
Did you update the touchpad drivers recently?
I updated mine recently on my Z2 and after the update the left click was way less responsive and was driving me crazy. I rolled back to the older driver and it was fine afterwards. -
Return that POS for a new one before its too late!
-
Noticed this too. Have to seriously mash the left click area to get a response now. Newer is not always better it would seem!
I don't have any Windows Restore points or backups for the old driver / settings - anybody know where I can get the original Mouse driver?? -
I had the same issue as well. I just went into device manager and did a driver rollback, then restarted.
-
Aha, never thought to do a driver rollback... will do this and see how I get on! Thanks a mill

Achusaysblessyou eecs geek ftw :D
Hmm from what i can see here, Sony only has 1 driver for touchpad dated 5/21/12... not sure if that's the one you want to roll back to:
Sony eSupport - SVZ131190X - Support
Although they should put all their driver releases on there... -
Are you having the same issue with right click? The trackpad physically clicks the same switch regardless of which side you push. Right versus left is determined by touch. If both left and right buttons are the same, sounds like hardware to me. If it's only left, perhaps it is a driver issue.
For the Z3, what's online is the "original" driver. If you want an older one, try selecting the Z2 model. It's the same trackpad in both so the Z2 driver should work. -
Wow!
rollback worked for me!!!
I didnt expect the new laptop to have the driver rollback option but it did. -
The issue I had was definitely software. As soon as I updated to the newest drivers (Z2) it was simply dropping a click every few clicks. I'm not sure if the right click did this as well.

Good news!

Good catch! I just got my new Ivy Bridge Z, and as soon as I installed Synaptic drivers I had issues doing left click / double click...
It looks like the latest build ("original" for the Ivy Z) has some obvious issues... -
Yesterday I got 2 new updates for my Z21 via VAIO Update. One of them was for the touchpad and after updating, I got the same left click problem mentioned in this thread.
I rolled back the driver in device manager as recommended here, but after that some of the gestures were not working and the touchpad was less sensitive.
What solved the problem for me was simply installing the original, older driver (can be found in C:\Windows\Drivers\EXE\Pointing Driver (Synaptics)). -
Was having the same problem after upgrading drivers and rolled back after finding this thread. Is everyone using the Synaptic driver's 2 finger scroll option? I used the 'TwoFingerScroll' app on my old Z and found that it was much smoother, however with this driver version (on the new Z) it causes my mouse to jump all over the place. Any suggestions?
-
On my Z2 I've been using two finger scroll with both v15 and v16 of the drivers. Under v15 sometimes the scrolling would not work but I've not seen a jumping cursor problem.
-
Just to clarify (and make sure we're on the same page) - I'm talking about the 3rd party 'Two Finger Scroll' app that can run in the tray.
I'm using driver V15.3.2.2 and when I use the app for 2 finger scrolling (instead of the Synaptics driver settings), my cursor frequently jumps if I have 2 fingers on the pad. My thought is that it is being told the very edge of the buttons are touch sensitive (as the touchpad is all 1 piece), this seems consistent with the way it behaves.
Is driver V16 newer than what is on the Sony support site? -
I noticed the same thing with my Z3 - sometimes the mouse buttons seem rather unresponsive. It seems that when I click further over to the left, I am more likely for the click to go through... perhaps to the right as well.
That is, there is a graduated response, and you have to get closer to the left/right of the click pad for it to work reliably.
Personally, I like mouse buttons that stick up (like on the Thinkpad). Much more dependable.

I just noticed the same thing on my Z2. It feels like the actual button is under the center/bottom of the track pad. It's easier to click in the center (default to left click) than on either edge. I can easily click on the textured part of the pad in the center (just above the shiny part) but not at all on the edges.
-
The Synaptics driver was at v16 long before Sony published the v16 version for the Z3. The OEM driver will work on the Z2/Z3 but it changes the behavior of the pad. One individual who tried it reported that using the Synaptics driver let him use the shiny to continue scrolling. That person liked the change. YMMV.
Sorry about the confusion -- I've not used the scrolling app you are asking about. -
Is there a consensus on which driver version to use (i.e. Sony vs. OEM? Version #?)?
-
I don't recall a lot of discussion one way or the other. In general I've not seen a lot of driver issues with the Z2 trackpad. Some early complaints the small size and accidental touches. I assume people have adjusted.
I'm using the Sony version v16 (published for the Z3) right now. -
Ah, got it - will try that. The version that shipped with my machine was clunky, the Sony update for the Z2 caused the left click to stop working and rollback doesn't work with 'TwoFingerScroll'. Lets try Z3 drivers next!
-
Scrolling is smoother with the v16 drivers but TwoFingerScroll still doesn't work- not strictly necessary but means no 2 or 3 finger tapping.
-
Two finger scrolling works for me with either driver. Once in a while it may stop and I have to reboot. Not very often though.
I don't see an option for 2 finger tapping on any Sony version of the driver.
New Z the Left click is barely working!
