Last night while in bed i was using my new z series and it said i had 8% battery left, at that point i decided to turn my z off so i could have enough battery to check my email in the morning. Remembering about battery drain, i decided to take my battery out of the laptop so the battery did not drain below 7% which would send my Z into sleep mode. In the morning when i woke up i plugged the battery back into the z, turned it on and when windows started i checked the battery life and it was at 3%, and as soon as i saw the battery, the Z went into sleep mode. I thought battery drain only happens when the battery is in the laptop, but i guess not, so this leads me to believe the battery drain is a problem with the battery and not with the Z series it self. Maybe i got a defective battery, what do you guys think? have you guys got this same problem?

Battery drain is a well talked about topic here, especially considering that the the older Z has a HUGE thread dedicated to battery drainage (search for it above~)

When you take the battery OFF the laptop, there is no drain. However, plug it back in and startup the machine and you have a lower battery rating than you expected. This (it's been so-called concluded here) is because the battery sends the OS incorrect info regarding battery levels. You try doing the same thing with a bit more charge and you'll notice that the battery level stays constant for a good hour or so.

Unfortunately, you turned on your machine when the chage level was too low (considering you set your machine to hibernate at 7%). The battery level should realistically be around 8% at the time of entering the OS, but since the OS is programmed (told by you via settings) to hibernate at 7%, and the battery sends the OS wrong info, what can the OS do? Hibernate.

So no, not a defective battery, just a design flaw on both the laptop and battery by Sony. In that regards, every (well, most since some models are not experiencing the drainage) is defective.

The old Z's battery drain thread.
