I know this sounds ridiculous but I think my new hard drive is causing my laptop fan to stop running..

I recently put a Western Digital 320GB 7200RPM Scorpio Black hdd (WD3200BJKT) into my laptop replacing the Toshiba 320GB 5400RPM hdd that came with it.. But after I installed it in the laptop.. my laptop fan doesn't run at all, causing the laptop to reach some really high temperature..
I took the WD hdd out and put the Toshiba hdd back in, the fan starts running again
Does anybody know what the problem is??

    Thanks

    Sounds like a software issue.

Tried stressing with Orthos (small FFTs) with both HDDs ?

Are both of them clones ?

    Yeah, that's what I thought
but I reinstalled Vista on the WD drive, and the fan still doesn't run

Yeah I did.. But the temperature got into the 80's and the fan still wasn't running.. so I stopped.. Didn't want the stuff inside to get damaged by the high temperature.

Nope.. I installed a fresh copy of Vista on the WD drive

Why don't you try to clone the Toshiba HDD on to the WD HDD. Even if you missed something before, it'll be covered.

Try updating the BIOS. You can let it reach the peak temp., the BIOS will shut down the notebook after a certain temp such as 95*C etc.

Or you can seek help from Sony, but they'll prob say that the WD HDD is the culprit.

Have you checked if your laptop needs any drivers for the fans? It shouldn't really but its easy to check for and would explain why a fresh vista install wouldn't run them.

    I was going to say,
that is the weirdest problem I have ever heard of.
I guess the recovery discs come with certain fan control firmware. Usually the fans are controlled straight from the Bios, but I guess thats not the case with your laptop.

It's interesting though as many people are interested in making their fans run less on Sony Vaios. This may mean it would be possible with software.

When my laptop fan wasn't running at all, my laptop was still only around 50 and 60 degrees celcius when browsing the web and listening to music (reason i didnt notice it till today)... that's how hot my macbook pro used to stand by at..

And the fans did not come on when temps got higher?

Nope.. I ran a stress test and the temperature got into higher 80s
so I stopped the test and shut the laptop off

Did you install the Sony shared library, the drivers for Sony Notebook controller and PI controller when you did the clean Vista install?

It is weird indeed. I wonder if anyone could hack the software/drivers to make the fan run less agressively.

I'll mone this to the Sony forum.

Are these factory recovery discs ones that you had to make yourself, or was it bundled with the laptop when you purchased it initially?

I don't think that's the problem.. there are many other users who have upgraded to a 7200rpm hdd without any problems..

I just think you got the spoiled rotten child version of the Sony SR series who threw a temper tantrum when you messed with it because everything hates change.
