I just bought a new Sony laptop and I was wondering how long should I charge it before I can use it. Thank you.

doesn't matter mate! just start using it any time! new batteries dont have "memory" so you dont have to charge for x amount of time before use! It will just keep charging until full, then discharge when running on battery until empty, thats about it...

Supposedly Li-Ion's don't need to be "primed" like the older Nickel based batteries did. Their first charge works pretty much the same as any subsequent charge. At least that's what I've read. With the older batteries, if you didn't prime them with a long charge before use, it could drastically reduce their capacity, similar to a "reverse" memory effect.

I read that a lot of the warnings that device manufacturers still include telling you to charge a battery 16 hours or something before first use, are CYA holdovers from the old battery days.

As dmorris68 said, they don't need to be primed at all. However the first few times you charge them they may not appear to provide a full charge. Don't be alarmed. Use it till the battery is low (10% or so) and recharge it. Then do that again a few times.
