Hey guys, I am struggling between SZ650 and FZ260. I live in Montreal, Quebec and FZ260 is not allow to be sold in retail here (cuz only english version is available) if i want one I would need to go to ottawa to get it :S
My question is, how much dedicated video RAM the FZ260 has (with 8400 GT) and how is it comparing with SZ (I think it has 8400 GS + 64M RAM - kinda small) and if I understand correctly the SZ has less video performance even it is smaller and look cooler.....
And does FZ260 has build-in bluetooth?
THX'n adv!

Hey Lau,
You've already done your research and what you've pointed out is pretty much on the nail.
You simply have to ask yourself how important it is for the other "intangible" features.
The SZ looks cooler and is lighter.
The FZ is markedly more powerful (In 3D) but you have to consider if you want to lug it around. (Which should be fine for many people if weight isn't an issue.)
The FZ has bluetooth.
I have both the high end SZ and TZ machines because the FZ was way too bulky for me. (If bulk and cool factor wasn't an issue, then you can have a lot of choices other than Sony. *laugh* I only go for Sony machines now because they blow the rest away in terms of how cool they look.) -
FZ has bluetooth?? then how come they list bluetooth adapter in their website for FZ260?? And I don't see a word of bluetooth in the spec?
BTW, I can't see the difference between 260 and 280, but it's $300 CAN difference?? -
Hmm,
I'm using the Asian website to check my machines.
All of the Sony machines have built in bluetooth.
If you use bluetooth and the FZ in your area doesn't have it, I would seriously advice against buying it. I can't live without built in bluetooth.
Which website are you using? -
Thanks man for all the advice so far.
I live in Canada so I am using www.sonystyle.ca, I am considering FZ260 or SZ650. I don't see any mentioned of BT for FZ models and when I check the global support site the only model has BT is FZ290 (according to the pdf manual), and this model is for US market only.
BTW, is there any BT add on? I don't want USB adapter, so is there a PCMCIA or similar card I can slide in and add the function? (obviously I am new to laptop)
And what size is the dedicated video RAM the FZ has? The site didn't say anything, or is it all share:S ??
The SZ is very popular from what I see, only more expensive and the screen seems a bit too flexable...since u have one, how reliable is it?? -
I dunno about the FZ but I'm very happy with my current SZ notebook, check specs in sig. The screen can be tilted till it's flat
and performance in 3d is average, good for what I need. 64 MB dedicated memory on my nvidia 7400 GO and 256 MB shared memoy for a total of 320 MB.
It is very well built and very lightweight. -
I am using a SZ and the FZ looks much bigger and heavier. Only seen the FZ in stores but it seem lighter and better looking now. Both models seem to share the same keyboard and the SZ is great as a portable laptop with the FZ more a desktop replacement.
The FZ i have seen in stores with both a 8400M GT and for the more expensive model with a 8600M GS. I think its 128MB dedicated on the FZ and 64MB on the SZ.
One main difference on the FZ is the screen quality on the more expensive model. I think it dual-lamp xbrite or something. The contrast, brightness and colour is amazing and much better than even the great SZ LED screen.
Comparing the two i notice the SZ has more warmer tint colour (Yellow) and the FZ has much cooler tint (Blue) colour on its screen but i am not sure if this is something to do with the display panel configuration. -
Hi Lau,
I'm using the premium version of the SZ and this model has the thinnest screen amongst the models.
It is actually quite sturdy as long as you're not someone who trashes your notebook.
I've also actually bought the other SZ models (and used them for at least a week) for several friends. (They wanted my advice for which notebook to purchase) The screen is pretty sturdy too. They are all still happy with their SZs so far and I've not heard them complaining about it. -

FZ260 has no built in Bluetooth but it has built-in Blu-Ray drive. SZ has built-in Bluetooth but doesn't have Blu-Ray drive and you must use external drive if you want Blu-Ray for SZ since SZ has 9.5mm DVD drive there is no 9.5mm Blu-Ray drive in the market.
FZ has 15.4" screen, while SZ has 13.3" and both have 1280x800 native resolution. So, FZ is slightly more comfortable for long time reading.
All SZs have 64MB dedicated video RAM. I am not sure about FZ.
FZ is 5.9 pounds, while SZ is 3.95 pounds (the carbon fiber model).
I would say, if you want portability go with SZ. If you want multimedia or bigger screen, go with FZ.
I personally prefer thin and light notebook and would not buy any notebook heavier than 4 pounds. I have SZ3 and I love it. Its light weight (mine is slightly lighter and thinner than the current SZ model). The only thing that I wish it has is 256MB dedicated video RAM and built in Blu-Ray drive. -
