I do not know much regarding the Sony laptop line and have basically just heard that they are thin laptops, expensive and are well built all-around.

Can anyone guide me as to which laptop (maybe even a non-Sony) I should go for with my budget. See I was considoring Dell for their 700m but have decided to go the electronic box store route (ie. Future Shop, BestBuy).

My needs are word processing, all office applications at same time basically, internet exploring. Pretty basic business studies processes BUT I do want a CRISP, bright, very nice display and I don't plan to game either so I think integrated graphics will be sufficient but let me know.

My budget is around $2000CDN MAX.

I want a thin, lighter laptop preferably no bigger than 14" display. I plan to take it around daily so...

Thanks for the Help. Any Sony suggestions or other makes would be appreciated.

Right now the S series (Sony) would be the best bet for you. If you want a 14" notebook, then the FJ series (also Sony) should be available soon.

Since it's been announced, I would guess by the end of this year in time for the holidays.

2000 cdn max isnt enough for much sony laptops.
However if you are not into 3d games, I suggest the FS series
They can be around 2000 or less (sometimes more depending on model) They have crisp and very bright screen not to mention beautiful screen.

You mentioned light and thin laptop. S series and T series or even TX series would fit into that category however those laptops are easily over your budget- i m sure with the new S 5xp. [not to mention those darn heavy taxes]

and the new FJ series- I have no clue when will be available nor if it will be in Canada. Hopefully the prices are similar to FS series.

I strongly suggest the Dell 700m. I own the Sony S series and dell 700m. I can proudly say for the price you pay for 700m, its definitely worth the price.

Let me also recommend the HP DV1000, Compaq V2000 and HP L2000. Great 14 inch thin and light laptops.

I second that, HP probably gives you the best bang for your buck. Their products are very reliable IMO (I have 4 HP products and none of them have ever failed on me) and plus they don't overcharge on many of their items like Sony (an example being $300 for double capacity batteries).

Another vote for the L2000. HP is the bang for buck leader.

I like Sony's style, but they are overpriced, and worse, in the new models, very hard/impossible to upgrade. On the S-series, you cannot upgrade the HD, so you have to buy the biggest hard drive when you buy the laptop (and pay an extra premium for that). And memory upgrades are not easy on those either. And the worse thing is that if the HD dies, you are SOL; no way to replace it and move on.

Hmmm interesting. Well it doesn't have to be specifically 14", I just didn't want to go any bigger than that as mobility will become some what of an issue. Sony just came to my mind because I know they make small notebooks and are popular for it. But sky123 recommends the 700m. Does the cost: performance outdo the similar sized/equiped Sony?

Thanks a lot for the input. I will still be searching around for the ideal laptop and am about to check out the Sony website.

I would avoid the Dell; they will break (that's why you have ot get a service plan). Some people like the 700m, but I would pass).

Sony's performance is not worth the extra price. I did a comparision between an s-series and the L2000 a few months back, and for comparable equipment, the Sony was twice as expensive.

Also, the L2000 have the 64bit chip, which makes it better moving forward to the 64 bit versions of Vista next year.

Again, from a price/perf agle, the L2000 is the best in my view.

Sony has an edge in weight, but if you compare the S-series with the L2000 and include the AC adapters, it's nearly even. (The Soncy AC adapter is a brick and the L2000 is very small.
