    HI all, Im at my wits end, and with Sony also. My screen cracked thanks to the airlines. I've replaced the screen, and now have no backlight. I also tried replacing the hard to find cable, still no joy!, I've check screen model numbers, still no joy, I even put the cracked screen back in and now there is no backlight on that. I found a forum on Dell inspirions on with same issue and they talk about a fuse. I found what I think is the fuse, test with no connectivity, tried a iron solder ball and still no luck! Any ideas, Im out of my frigin mind and SONY want Over $600 odd to fix!

    thanks

    Most likely a fuse issue.
    I just fixed mine (model: VPCEA24FM). EXACTLY same issue: I left a thumbdrive on the keyboard and someone closed the laptop for me == broken screen (the screen still lights up, displays white screen only). I replaced the screen myself, no backlight since then......
    I checked tons of forums, there are a lot of people facing the same issue, but there is not a cure for my exact model, the most close one is some guy replaced a fuse (F7 for his case) on a sony notebook motherboard and fixed it. Others are mostly Dells laptop, they replaced either F1 or F8 depends on the model.
    Enough about the background. The infomation I got from these forums drives me to examine the motherboard of my laptop. I checked carefully and tested most of the fuses on board. Finally found one fuse is blown. That fuse was labeled as F16 near the plug for lcd screen on the motherboard. It should be 0 ohm, but tested as 20 ohm. then I applied a solder blob on it. I know, I should not do that since I have already ordered several small fuses and they are on the way, but I can't wait... It turns out that is the correct fuse! Luckly, my laptop doesn't have any shorts for the screen circuit. It lit up right after I put everything back and pressed the power button.
    I took pics of the location of that fuse for other people who is stucked like I did. But I just registered here, not sure whether I can upload any pics, I will try.

    Oh, I forgot to mention: Since those fuses are tiny, the testing pins of your Ohm meter has to be really clean, especially the tips of those pins, or you can sharpen the tips if you don't mind damaging your Ohm meter. Another thing you need to consider is the motherboard may collect some dust on the fuses which might cause false reading. I found several fuses on my motherboard tested with high or no connectivity first, but after I wiped the fuses with alcohol and sharpened my testing pins with sand paper, they were all tested as good fuses(0 Ohm). Hope this could help you find the correct fuse.

    You need to remove all other parts, then take out just the motherboard.
    Take a clear and high resolution photo of both sides of motherboard.
    Take the area around LVDS (LCD) connector on both sides

    I have replaced SONY VAIO VPCCA290X screen, no back light. I took the battery out while I was doing it. Then I put the old one back. it has back light. It shouldn't be the fuse problem, right? What the problem will be?

    NO, it's not fuse problem.
    Make sure you have LED LCD. If so, it's LCD problem.

    Can anyone confirm if this is the fuse that is the trouble maker on my Vaio? Multimeter says its a dud and its located right on the backside of where the LVDS connector is but I need some reassurance :)

    Another success story from me, i managed to get work my vaio vpceb4l1e burnt fuse, after 2 hours of work and i found f16 fuse marked with an N sign, soldered it and it worked like a charm. Thank you... Have a nice day :)

    note: i replaced broken screen with battery on, it was the cause.

    @applemaca
    The fuse is pointed by red arrow.

    @trieudoahong
    It is not a trick, you have to replace or short the fuse to get backlight back.
    It could be a fault in design or just improper handling when people replace broken LCD (not unplug battery/AC adapter).

    You might have other problems than just a blown fuse.
    I notice the board was suffered liquid spilled with evidences of corrosion.

    I have pointed out the fuse for you on the second photo.
    It is at lower left corner of the board on the side without CPU and chipset.

    Your laptop is EB series, so F16 will be fuse for LED.
    Look at the photo on page 3 to see where it is in your laptop's board.

    If you want to fix the issue, sooner or later you have to take the board out.
    Let take the boad out and take a photo of both side around the LCD connector, so people can help.

    Yes I'm 100%, I replaced a cracked LED screen just few days ago and the backlight was out on both new and old screen, this is driving me crazy as everything works but the backlight, I can see the images with a flashlight up against the screen and it's LED as there's no inverter and the model number PCG-71811W VPCEH26EA which only come in LED option

    Hello!
    I had the same problem and used the bridge to solve. I really appreciate everyone's help. My notebook is VAIO PCG-61411L
    Now I wonder where I can buy the fuse N to do the job the right way because if it's there is because it has some utility.
    Thank you!

    I've got a Sony VAIO VGN-TZ31WN with the same problem. I've just replaced the LCD panel and have no backlight. The screen works perfectly well on a similar TZ computer so I know it's not a fault with the screen panel. There are two options I can think of - either the hinge switch is sticking down or the the fuse, as mentioned above, is blown. Problem is I can't find either!

    Anyone help on this, especially the hinge switch as I can't believe I cannot find it, on most laptops they're obvious.

    You should have a steady hand to take a picture.
    Those blurry pictures like these are really hard hard to see.
    However, the small green one in the last picture could be the one.
