Hi there, I am new to this forum but I did use your advice for a Sony laptop backlight not working and bridging the fuse on the motherboard worked a treat. I now have a Compaq laptop which is only 3 months old and the owner spilled a small amount of liquid on it, everything is working perfectly except the backlight. Do you think bridging the fuse would work? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Give it a try. You have nothing to lose. However, spill damage can be worse than what you thought.

Photo attached. The fuse is the small rectangle next to big brown capacitor.

No, just the tiny one on the right of the brown capacitor and in the center of the circle.
It is the fuse and you need to bridge it.
The big brownie one on the left is capacitor. If you bridge it, you will get big problem.

You need soldering iron, rosin flux, and solder lead and then make 2 ends of the fuse connected. It may be hard to do because the fuse is tiny and tight clearance, so remove it would make it easier for you to connect 2 pads together.
Anyway, check the fuse first to confirm it's blown.

I'd like to share my experience here, because I am really glad to have found this thread. It helped me to solve the problem on my Sony Vaio.

I had the same problem like others that after replacement of screen backlight was dead (but screen working I could see under the light of a lamp). Now I grabbed all my courage and opened the case of my Sony Laptop Vaio SVE151J11M (I first removed the battery). After removing the case on the backside, I could see the mainboard and the display connector. On the left side of that connector I saw a fuse called F4 marked with an N. I checked with a multimeter that is was blown. (see the photo I took in following link where I marked the fuse with a red circle http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/3343/ayc3.jpg)

I took me a while to solder a bridge onto that fuse (with a small piece of wire) because of shaky hands :) After putting together the laptop, putting the battery in and turning it on: the backlight was working, problem solved.

Thanks a lot to ngvuanh for his excellent advice here and to all the others to keep this thread running!

I have been looking at this thread to see if there is any solution for my problem.

I have replaced the LED Panel in my Sony Viao SVE14AE11W
This has a 14" Panel and uses a B140RW02 LED Panel

I have looked around the mobo connector for the LED panel, but can only find a couple of Fuses in that area, Both of Which have 0.0 Resistence when tested..

F3 [P20 Written on it] Just to the left of the connector
    http://imageshack.us/a/img211/4171/p8a3.jpg

F2 [P15 Written on it] on the underside of the connector.
    http://imageshack.us/a/img211/5734/1kp8.jpg

Is there one I'm not seeing?, Grateful for any help :)

Thank you all for the useful information!!! A few months ago my sons Sony Vaio screen cracked. Ordered him a new one, installed it and ended up with no backlight. After reading all the relevant posts in this forum, I decided to try my luck and at least take the back off and check it out. I have no experience in this whatsoever. After disassembling his laptop, I finally got up the nerve to try to bridge the fuse. I have a basic soldering iron, some flux and some good solder. A good magnifying glass is a must. The fuse is so small i wasn't sure if I could drop a small enough glob of solder on it without getting a little on the surrounding board. I ended up gently masking around it with some electrical tape. Got one small nice blob on it and hoped for the best. This model is an SVE 151D11L. I did not realize that I didn't have to remove the motherboard to do this: until after the fact. I had a hell of a time connecting the ribbon connections. I put it all back together and used thermal compound on reassembly of the heatsink fan assembly as suggested in one of the posts. Radio shack has a good selection. Explained to my son that it may never work right again. Turned it on and IT WORKED GREAT!! Surprised the heck out of me an my son smiled wider and longer than i've seen in years. You're advice made me dad of the year. I hope this helps someone else. Thank all of you again!

    Dear Ngvuanh,
Could you please have a look on my MB in Sony Vaio SVE1112M1EW
The backlight went off when the brocen led lcd screen was replaced.
Based on prev. posts I tried to short cut F2 (as per multimeter it is gone) however backlight still not function.
I checked the other fuses near to F2 and they seems to be ok. Laptop is working well with ext. disp. and backlight is not on any of the two screens now. Do you have any idea what to do?

I am trying to find the fuse you mentioned F2, but I can't see it anywhere from your photos.
Anyway, you can also try F8, as I circled it in attached photo.

Back again, had another look at my SVE14 Motherboard.

Discovered on the other side of a board a fuse.. or so i think.

if you load up the image and have a look i got two things labeled.
1- has P written on it tests fine.
2- has 6 wires coming from it but says F25 near it, but doesnt look like a fuse (with that 5 wires tested back at no resistance, but 1 leg was not getting a reading)

Sorry to SVE14 owners. I was a little busy.
The fuse I found is on other side of LCD connector marked by letter "S"
It is in the middle of red circle in attached picture.

It's hard to tell what's wrong if the fuse is good.
You should have a multimeter to measure the fuse and make sure it reads 10.5v~11v both ends.

High guys, so thanks for the response earlier, but after having a look at both motherboards, the old one (not working) and the new one I cannot identify the "fuse".. Could you help me out you guys.

    Thanks in advance.

Above is the old motherboard, not working now at all..

And this is the new one, where it looks like there isn't even a fuse.. it works it just doesn't have a backlight..

David, pictures above show me the board is not for LED backlit because of absence of F16.

    Untitled.png

If this is your new board, then you bought a wrong one.
Otherwise, your laptop is not LED backlit LCD.

One, a 40 pin connector. It would seem weird that the broken screen, even though it was cracked it would still light up.. if one after I unplugged it, that it stopped lighting any screen.

Hi there, I don't mean to swamp the people helping out here but could someone please take a look at these images from a Vaio SVE151J13M? Same story as previous posters on this thread, changed a cracked LED (with battery in!) have the faint display with no backlight. LED tests fine in other machines and working LED tested in the Vaio produces same result. It has the green coloured fuse with the N as in other images posted here. Let me know if better quality images are required.

    Tom here, Please Help Me

I'm looking for confirmation as to the
Correct FUSE for repair, it seems obvious, though.

I would like to be sure and want to add this model
to the forum database with pictures.
    Sony Viao PCG-71315L

I am aware there is an Inverter Connector but
it is not used on this model I have and it most certainly
    uses a LED display.

    Tom here Again

It seems my answer is on post page 10.
    The PCG-71311M motherboard of johnyb98
is the same motherboard as in
my PCG-71315L - the same designation numbers
    on the board back.

I started re-reading through all posts
and found it, after following the advise of ngvuanh to
photograph both sides of the board, not so easy with
my large fingers and the power tape holding things
together with the somewhat tricky keyboard removal
to get at all the connectors, very necessary for unbroken
    ribbons on the PCG-71315L.

    NOTE:
The F16 designated N fuse is directly below
the LED panel connector on the bottom of the
    motherboard.
also note there is a dip-switch that
reads PANEL ID which may be part of the reason
for the Inverter Conn designation and connector
on this Mobo, suggesting the ability to install an
    older LCD panel.

ngvuanh pointed out the fuse for johnyb98
(pg 10) now it's my turn to try a fuse fix.
I have purchased the exact same as original LED
    for install.
    Will post back results.

Here's some piks for reference again.
Great Thanks to ngvuanh & johnyb98
