I would much prefer to own a Sony vs a Dell factoring in my prior experience (over30 laptops owned) however the Sony FZ290 does not seem to come with a 8600GT or a screen with higher than 1280 resolution. Both high in terms of priority on my list. Either I am missing something or hopefully Sony is coming out with some newer options here shortly.
Will pull the trigger in about a month.

For 15.4" screen, 1280x800 resolution is actually a sweet spot in my opinion. Remember, having higher resolution with the same screen size equals smaller font or smaller icon. I have problem reading some texts at 1280 with my 13.3" notebook.

Yeah, thanks, I am aware of that but 1280 is just too small for my needs. The Dell at 1680 on the 15.4 is comparable to my present 1920 on 17". I just enlarged the text a bit in Windows. I just no longer feel the need for luggin a 17 laptop around.

    You may want to consider Panasonic Y7. 14.1" at 1400 x 1050, 12.1(W) x 9.56(L) x 1.29 - 1.81 (H) [inch], 3.3 pounds. Very light but its video card is only Intel Integrated Graphic though. http://www.dynamism.com/y7/specs.shtml.
