Hi All
I have a TT190 with a factory-installed SSD. As many of you are probably aware, Windows 7 support for TRIM greatly improves the performance of an SSD that is used over time. But the drive must support it.
Recently Intel, Samsung, Corsair and some other manufacturers have released new firmware for their SSDs that supports TRIM.
My TT190 contains a Samsung MMCQE28GFMUP-MVA SSD drive. I suspect that Sony uses that same drive (or drives from the same series) in other Vaio models.
I wanted to understand if there is any TRIM firmware already released or planned for this drive, so I sent an email to the relevant support group in Samsung. After two weeks I received the following reply:
I especially like the last phrase.![]()
Anyway, this is very disappointing as the notebook was purchased within the last six months. Perhaps if we complain we can change something. I suggest other people to go to their feedback page and push them to release a firmware update that supports TRIM. Here is the link: https://crm.samsungsemi.com/CCS/form/questionFormP.jsp?cmd=product
Regards,
Ron

I have the same SSD and also contacted Samsung because of the TRIM update. This is the answer I received:
So how I understand it, it's not Samsung who we should ask for an update, it's Sony. -
There is no technical reason they need to agree with Sony to add this support.
It is probably financial: Samsung wants Sony to pay for the work to update the firmware.
Anyway, it cannot hurt for us to also push Sony to agree with Samsung to update the firmware. Does anybody know any good channels (other than their standard support process, which based on my experience with the touchpad problems cannot deal with a request like this) to direct such a request to? -
As i mentioned in the TT owners thread Intel have not provided firmware for their G1 drives either. So to say that Intel has provided firmware for their SSD HD's is not quite correct. They have though provided firmware for their
G2 drives. Samsung drives are far from being the only G1 drives that haven't been supported.
Their G2 drives though can be supported.
Yes, it would be good if these drives could be supported if possible.
What is the firmware of your drive?
I know some people have been flashing their drives with firmware from other vendors.
I haven't though read of anyone doing this with a G1 drive. -
Luckily for me, my SSD model is supported - I've upgraded it later, not bought a laptop with it.
What will I gain with this upgrade, what good does it do? Is that the "trick" to prevent SSD from getting slower after time of usage? -
My MMCQE28GFMUP-MVA has the firmware version VAM0501Q.

It seems to confirm what i was thinking.
This thread is a very helpful source of information.

This G1 Samsung drive was used in other brands like Dell and Lenovo but they came with slightly different part numbers but are basically the same drive.
You might want to post your concern in that thread i linked and see what they say.

I don't think we have any firmware with TRIM for 1,8" yet
-
That is interesting.
Someone pointed out here that Lenovo has a FW update for 1.8 drives on their website.

If you google this you will see lots of discussion about this also.
You can have a look through the Lenovo website also.

There is other firmware out there also.
I have a PB22J-JS3 in my TT. I have considered updating my firmware but i don't have time to do a clean install right now.
-
I saw this update too, but I don't think it supports Trim. Anyway, I'll update to this firmware tonight. How can we know if we have trim?
-
There is always risks with updating any FW. If you do use it let us know how you got on.
I think if you download Crystalmark disk it will tell you what your drive supports.

Edited to add:
I was reading this thread also.
Those with a PBJJ/PM800 2.5 HD have been upgrading to TRIM. They were flashing their FW with a FW that is TRIM upgradable and then using the Muskin updater.

I'm not sure if this will work for a 1.8 drive but for those that have a G2 drive may be it is something to consider. You might need to put your HD in an enclosure to try it.
If anyone tries this could you let us know how you got on. I would give it a go but like i mentioned before i don't have the time do a clean install now. -
I honestly have no idea if my drive is G1 or G2 or whatever.
I just feel that I bought a not-cheap notebook only 6 months ago, with the promise that it would fully support Windows 7. And at that time Windows 7 support for TRIM was already publicized.
So I am disappointed that such a current and high-end model would be passed over for support. -
MUP is Gen 1
MXP is Gen 2
Sony uses 1.8 SSD models now. I think they use Toshiba or Samsung. Are they shipping out models that don't support TRIM? Has anyone got one very recently? -
I have a Lenovo OEM 1,8" MXP but I can't update the firmware. Got an error: I/O Information not found in BIOS, I guess I can't update te firmware from a laptop other than Lenovo.
I wonder if the lastest models (DXP) support TRIM -

Thanks for the information, howaboutnow. But that doesn't make our Samsung SSDs TRIM-compatible.
No SSD TRIM support for TT190 (and possibly other Vaios)
