Called SonyStyle today to order an sz160 and the salesperson told me that they got 100 or so in on Monday (3/27) but that they were sold out and they wouldn't be getting more in. She said the sz160 was being replaced with a newer model (didn't they just release the 160?) and she had no idea when they would be available.

If this is true then why is SonyStyle.com still listing the SZ160 and an 'Add to cart' button?

A couple weeks ago a Sony white glove sales rep told me they didnt have any dates for the release of the 170 & 180. There was a shortage of 160s at the time. Why would Sony discontinue a model that is in such demand to be replaced by a similar model with edge (170)? It would seem there is room in the market for the 160 (base premium), 170 (base premium plus edge) and 180 (robust premium plus edge).

Discontinuing rumors just dont make sense.

Sony did that with the ordering last month too. That message is put in place to temporarily stop the orders when demand far exceeds supply. The ordering is resumed once supply catches up. They didn’t pull the model from the site because they still plan on selling more models in a couple days or weeks.

The Sony rep I talked to a few weeks ago said the SZ's (especially the premium) has been the highest demand laptop Sony has seen since she can remember.

This rumor still doesn’t make sense to me.

Well Sonys handling of the release for these laptops have been a nightmare for everyone one involved so who knows what they are really doin. But the way I see it:

I doubt that the SZ160 will be discontinued forever but maybe they are going to stop production for awhile to create the SZ170, why well the SZ160 and SZ170 are identical except for the edge card. So maybe Sony recieved their supplies of edge cards, and since they are limited on all the other things (camera/fingerprint sensor) they decided to make the SZ170 with the current supplies they have. I'm sure they are going to sell it more expensive and I've seen acouple of people commeting that they are waiting for either the SZ170/180 b/c of the Edge card. SO maybe thats why they might stop production of the SZ160. And last time that they put the message about the SZ160 being unavialable they had a date, this time they didn't put one so maybe its been placed on hold indefiently. Again this is just a theory.

Another thing that I have been wondering, is to they even make the SZ150s? or are they ever going to make those? Again the only diffrence is that it comes with a 80GB HD I really don't even understand why they would sell it? Maybe to create another price range.

Your theory makes more sense to me than discontinuing all together. Supplies for the premium are very low so using what would be 160 models and adding the edge card to make a 170 seems plausible.

I think the demand of the premium models is so high Sony doesn’t need to produce a 150. All the premium supply can be used for the higher priced 160 and for the edge models. Also, Sony has priced the 140 (standard model) high and is still able to move many units of the standard line which is easier to manufacture (they have enough supply for the demand of the standard line).
