    Hi All,

I have just purchased a Sony Vaio VPCEA1Z1E laptop that has a built in Blu Ray drive and a HDMI output. I bought it so that I could watch Blu Ray films on my HDTV but I seem to be having a problem with the sound output.

The laptop is running Windows 7 and I am using Corel WinDVD that came bundled with the laptop. When I try and play a Blu Ray movie on my TV via the HDMI cable the picture is fine and there is sound output on the TV during the splash screen and also during the Blu Ray menu's for the film but as soon as I select play and the movie starts I cannot hear any sound. If I turn on commentary then that is played through the TV but still no sound from the actual film. If I change the sound output to my laptop speakers then the sound is fine but it is just an issue over the HDMI cable.

I have tried various different settings but I cannot get this to work. I have read about HDCP causing problems and I was wondering whether it is something to do with this? I have also read posts where people say to get the sound from the headphone jack on the laptop but I would rather sort it out so it goes via the HDMI cable directly to the TV. Can anyone offer any help or advice on this issue?

    try this

You need to change your audio playback device to hdmi or digital audio output.

If you right click on the speaker icon on the far right of the taksbar and select playback device.

    Hi Tinderbox,

Thank you for the extra quick reply, I have already done this (changed it to S/PDIF) hence I am able to hear sound from my laptop, the Blu Ray menu's (where you can select scenes or play the movie etc) and commentary from within a movie but just nothing from the actual movie itself. Any other suggestions?

I am having the same exact problem. HDMI Output Sound plays on menus and everything except the actual film. I have an ASUS G73JH-A1 and WinDVD 2010 Pro. Someone got any suggestions/solutions?
Any help would be really appreciated. :(

Sorry for reviving an old topic, and thanks! ;)

Have you updated your drivers? Have you updated the video playing software? Have you tried selecting a different audio track while the Blu-Ray is playing, like say change it from DTS or Dolby TrueHD to something like DD 5.1 or something? Also, under the playback devices in the Audio settings you can right click to "Show Disabled Devices" and see what all is there.

I think I resolved the issue by changing a setting in the advanced tab of my output device to NOT allow it to grant exclusive control of the device

Guys, can you help me out here. I'm kind of new to windows and am experiencing this problem as well.

Which setting exactly do I have to change and where would i find it?

    Thank you.

Ok, so I popped in Avatar and I have a couple of different options for audio and dts 5.1 isn't passing through, but regular dolby is.

Problem is not all blurays have the same audio options. I popped in shutter island and only dts 5.1 is available so i cannot hear sound through the tv and have no other option. that is why i ask how to change the settings on the vaio instead of relying on the disc audio options.

    thanks

If the disk only has DTS (which I find highly unlikely) then there's nothing the computer or software can do, if you don't have a receiver or piece of equipment that can decode DTS. Every disk I've ever seen had some form of Dolby sound, and maybe a secondary DTS/DTSHD-MA track if it's Blu-Ray.

OK, i have double checked it.

    AVATAR audio options:
    - English 5.1 DTS HD
    - English Dolby Surround
    - English 5.1 Descriptive

    Shutter Island audio options:
    - English 5.1 DTS HD ONLY

I have the same issue as the OP. audio plays fine in the menus and prior to clicking "play movie"
The above posts suggest they have found a way to get audio playing on such discs with limited audio options, I just need to know exactly what they did.

    Thank you.

update: i have 2 tv's in my house.

LG 55LHX - The sound works on my LG tv. It is a higher quality than my bravia so it must be able to decode the sound

Bravia z4100 - Sound does not play during the movie.

Ironic huh? that my sony laptop doesn't work seamlessly with my sony tv.

You've got that backwards. Your Sony TV doesn't work seamlessly with your Sony laptop. :) But you're right, most average HDTV's do not play anything other than AC3 / PCM.

If you ever buy a home theater system, make sure the receiver accepts HDMI connections so that way it can decode all the tracks no matter what.
