So my dad is in search of the perfect laptop for his needs. Battery life and weight dont matter, but heres what does:
He wants an i7, ssd, medium to high resolution, and noise free. Meaning almost no fan noise under low load. Oh, and Blu Ray is mandatory too for whatever reason which is why I'm here at the Sony forum.

So his first attempt at this was an HP Envy about a year ago. Didnt have Bluray, but met most of those needs besides the noise issue, so he returned it because of that.

Since then he and my mom have been using an iPad, but he's grown tired of the small size and thus wants a 15 or 17 inch laptop with the criteria I mentioned.

Last week I finally ordered a fully spec'd Vaio T series for him. i7, 256 ssd, bluray, etc, but, to a lesser extent than the HP Envy he bought, it still has the fan run under low load. Rather than continually running at a low rpm, it kicks in every once in a while and starts up almost like a platter harddrive does. Quite annoying.

And so I'm here to ask you guys. Is there anything in the Vaio lineup thats noise free? How about the S series?

    Thanks

I own VAIO S, E and once Z1, Z2, but I would suggest VAIO E15 or E17 since others have noticeable fan noise under normal load.

i wonder if its because of the work necessary to push the resolution where as the E series is a much lower res.

It could be a factor, but E series has much bigger fan which mean it can blow more air at slower speed, so less noise would produce.
E14 has 1600x900 and E17 is full hd.

I have an E series laptop and also think it makes a little too much noise. Nothing really you can do about it.

I also have an E series ( 1156 socket ) that drives me crazy. The fan runs at maximum speed even without touching the laptop i think its got its own brain. It stops for a while then it goes again at full speed without any program opened. Is there a way to control it?

not sure. before i got my current Thinkpad, i had a dell 9100 which had a fan far, far worse than than anything ive ever used. had to suffer through that for 4 years of college, so when it came time to upgrade, i made sure to find something that was silent; and this thinkpad sure is. to help the dell run quieter a bit, i'd use speedfan, but that only helped a bit, and i eventually stopped using it.

ive got no problem with laptops running loud under stress, but fan whine at idle or low load is unacceptable.

my dad still hasnt commented that he plans to return this one, but then again, i think i've seen him on the ipad longer past few days anyhow.

I read that the new Vaio S15 with Intel 4400 (not dedicated) graphics is silent during idle and light office work.

Does he mind using an external bluray player/video card? (aka the Power Media Dock for Sony Z).
I currently own a Z series laptop (the latest model) and under heavy loads such as playing games or running multiple programs at once the laptop runs silent with the Power Media Dock.
Without it though, the fan does make noticeable noise when it is under heavy load (silent otherwise).

edit: the Power Media Dock had been running silent for me so far also, so overall no noise.

Yeah the S is extremely quiet on "Stamina" mode.

A warning, however: on "Speed" mode when pushing the GPU (gaming for example) it sounds like a 747.

    Hi there!

Has anybody tried to use the fan control software NoteBook FanControl ([Vorstellung] NoteBook FanControl (NBFC) - ComputerBase Forum) with the Sony Vaio S13P? Instead of the Sony control center it seems like this software might be able to get the notebook completly silent.

Til now there is only a config file available for the Sony Vaio SVE1711 and it seems that this file is not really compatible with the S13. :-( So I tried to create an own config file using the documentation (PDF) and the tool Read & Write, but til now i wasn't able to find the relevant parameters of the embedded controller, because there are so many hex values changing every 5 seconds. Maybe someone can help me?

Does somebody know which embedded controller Sony is using? Maybe there is a documentation somewhere in the web.

    BR,

    JackShepard

Almost no fan noise with low temps under heavy load; does this even exist with any laptop?

BIOS options, or lack thereof, prevented anyone from modding fan speeds with the F.

The Sony Vaio S15 does not make a sound. The only time it sounds like a jet taking off is when you put a disc in the blu-ray player.

While it doesn't sound louder than the average, saying it doesn't hardly make a sound is just not so.
