I recently bought a Sony Vaio FW. I found that the Blu-ray ROM (which is a Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500s) is extremely noisy (I am not a very picky person, but the noise is very annoying and even disturbing my video watching.) Anyone with similar experience? Anyone has ever requested Sony to change a new Blu-ray ROM which is quieter? Which manufacturer of the blu-ray should be quieter? Thanks.

I assume you are using the default VAIO blu-ray software? If so I suggest trying the trial version of PowerDVD, I found it plays blu-rays with a lot less noise.
Also here has been an update of the VAIO blu-ray software, I have not tested it myself but maybe it is better noise wise.

While the noise is there, it could be worse; we also own a 17" HP that has Blu-ray and in addition to the Blu-ray drive we have to contend with the loud fan noise that kicks in the minute the laptop tries to play the movie.

    Cheers,
