Thanks for the reply, then I think there must be something wrong with my fan. The whirring is not quite loud, but is constant and high frequency (even at idle), that makes me crazy.

Mine had the same problem and I returned it. Hopefully my replacement is quiet like others say.

Interesting. In fact I know there are some people complaining about the fan whirring also. The fan quality control is not so good....

I checked on the S15 in a store where it was looping a high definition video all day in "SPEED" mode (not stamina). The laptop's surface was not hot (it was warm on the front right edge just below the arrow keys) and there was almost no hot air getting out from the rear vent. The environment was warm - it was noisy in the store but the laptop sounded quiet (i did my best to check that).

It is not loud. But it is really disturbing when you can hear a constant whistle. It is not good experience if you want to work with it. Any other people can provide some opinion here? Thanks!

Hey OP, check task manager that your laptop isn't having something use up the CPU. Also download HWMonitor and look at the temps. Just to be sure there's no reason the fan should be that loud.

Surely I checked the CPU usage. The fan emits a really low volume but high frequency whistle even at 1% CPU. I can hear it clearly even at working distance in a quite environment. No other guys have this issue??!! Thanks.

To Ninjazn: Did you get the replacement? Is it still making "hummm" noise?

My first s15 was replaced because of the fan. It was really loud and than it turned off and would not turn back on. Now my replacement has an issue with the headphone jack!

Haven't received my replacement yet. I'll post to let you know.

    Also,

That is unfortunate. My first S15 had the headphone jack problem as well, I'm hoping my replacement does not.

No issues with the fan noise. I might just keep the S15 I have now due to the fact it’s my only computer for school. I cant afford to wait on a replacement. Not to mention I'm still waiting on my refund on the first S15

Here is the sound of my fan on both speed and stamina

Sony VAIO S Series Fan Noise [Stamina vs Speed] demo - YouTube

without load in stamina all I hear is the hard drive
without load in speed (and priority set to ventilation) I hear a steady whirl.

My headphone jack is also very very tight (absurdly tight), primarily the last 3 mm. Removing the headphone from the jack takes even more effort.

I just got my replacement Vaio S 15.

Guess what? BOTH the fan noise AND the headphone jack problems are still there.

To top it off, when I got the laptop the first thing I noticed when I removed it from the packaging was the screws holding the battery case were loose and the case itself was popping off.

I'm going to have to call Sony again I guess.

Wow I would be extremely disappointed. I was successful at pushing my headphone in with extreme force. I would not recommend this as I had to pry it out with plies. I will be calling Sony tomorrow; I will also try to be compensation as this is my second issue, and I just want to see if I can get something for free!

    p.s. don't judge me

The headphone jack is just really tight, removing the cable is harder than forcing it in. Definitely unpleasant, I do find the fan noise to be very acceptable though.

I'm not judging you at all. I feel compensation is necessary because each time I send it in for replacement it takes them 2 weeks before I get a laptop back. That is 2 weeks that I should have been using the laptop but am unable to because of their quality control/poor manufacturing.

OK, maybe I am a bit sensitive to the fan noise, however in this video there is also high frequency whirring at about 3:57 (stamina mode). It is not loud, but it's disturbing. I am not sure if other one can hear it??

So my attempt to receive compensation for this issue was a no go. They politely told me that it is not really there fault that I've had 2 issues with 2 different s15. I could return it for another but I feel this would be pointless as the next one they send me will no doubt have the same issue with the headphone jack.

I got off the phone with them yesterday and they said the same thing to me.

I've been trying to fix the headphone jack thing myself though. This is what I've done:

    1) Get an old pair of headphones (one that you don't care if it breaks)
    2) Plug them into the headphone jack and keep pushing (even though you're worried it may break).
    3) Eventually my headphones did go all the way into the headphone jack and I was able to hear sound from both the R and L ear buds.
    4) Remove the headphones (it takes some effort).
    5) Repeat the entire process again and again...and again.

My hope is that after doing it 10-15 times, the headphone jack won't be as tight and difficult to work with. Maybe then the headphones will just go in normally and there will be no issue. I'm going to keep giving this a shot and since I still am within the 30 day return window, if my solution doesn't work, I may return it.

Hi Ninjazn, did you check the video that was posted in the second page? I think the "humm" noise is quite audible even at stamina.

I agree with you. The humming is always present even on stamina. I guess I'm just going to live with it because the laptop has everything else that I want in a laptop.

Right now it is raining outside where I live and I can't hear the laptop at all. As long as it keeps raining I guess I'll be fine, haha. :p

I decide to come back to this thread, since I've just ordered a replacement. Actually I heard from others who also complained about the fan noise in another forum. Therefore I am sure there is a "fan-gate" here.

My VAIO really is super quiet.
I never hear it really. Even when its dead silent around. Ive heard it like a few times. But all those times its been cos ive done something really heavy, and even then the sound is not that loud or with an anoying pitch.
And my headphone jack is not that tight ath all. I do not have to force the last mm. Its a little tighter then say my iphone but i dont need to press hard or anything.
Maby i just got lucky with my unit.
The only thing i notcied on my unit was that the pagedown button is tilted abit. So one side is half pressed of the button. But its not like its almode falling off or beeing pressed all the time. It feels the same when pressing it. So its just abit tilted really.

Any luck with your replacement units?
