This is FYI for anyone with a Sony VAIO, Windows Vista Home Premium, and NIS 2007 preloaded. I agonized for two months what to do when the 2007 NIS trial expired. Scoured the internet for reviews on every security product out there and found dozens. Everyone had their own opinion. Some by experience. Some just based on rumors and old info. Norton was trashed a lot in favor of so called lighter and faster products. I am not computer savvy and have never bought a security product before. I finally decided to upgrade to the NIS 2008. I went through my Norton Account I had set up on the laptop with the trial version. Clicked on Special Offers and chose the NIS 2008. It downloaded quick and easy. Deleting 2007 then installing 2008. No problems. I find PLENTY of configuration options and the ability to set what gets scanned and when. A little faster than 2007 and quicker on web browsing, so it seems. I don't use the anti-phishing on 2008 or 2007. NIS 2008 is extremely unobtrusive and easy to use. This is not a post to debate products, just first hand information for anyone in a similar dilemma.

Easy and Free Solution:
Uninstall NIS and install AVG Anti-Virus, and use the built in Windows Firewall. IE7 has a phishing filter. Windows Vista includes Windows Defender which is anti-spyware and is downloadable for XP.
Norton HAS to get OEMs to put their CRAP on every machine otherwise people would figure out they don't really need them. -
I have tried most AV since MS-DOS day. For now, my preference go to Kaspersky Internet Security because it is reliable, and does not takes up to much system resource (hard disk space, CPU & RAM usage).
It's a pity how low has the Norton brand fall. Whatever latest offerings with the "Norton" moniker should be dragged out, shot & quartered. -

I have symantec antivirus corporate edition 10.2. It's really low on system resources. But it occupies like 190 MB of space.

NORTON 2008 >= all other security software combined... -
The worst thing about Norton is trying to uninstall it. Took me hours after uninstalling (with Windows) my bloatware trial version to realize I had to download their special tool to get it all removed. Some of my favorite programs stopped working properly until I fixed it. I will never EVER pay for Norton after that.
Just my 2 cents. Glad your happy with your purchase, rugmankc. -
Thanks waterwagen,
Didn't want to start ANOTHER security debate. There are many fine ones out there, a personal choice. Just wanted to let folks with 2007 installed know that they can download 2008 without uninstalling 2007. I don't know about prior 2007 Norton products, but both 2007 and 2008 run quietly. If they run slow, I don't notice or know any better. Either way, I have no issues at this time. However, one of my reasons for staying with Norton was the many complaints like yours of totally uninstalling it. I am no computer wizard and didn't want to mess up my laptop. I saw where there were comments saying you could install 2008 over 2007, so I thought that was the safest route. No regrets. -
I don't know why this topic in sony section this should be in software section.by the way i also like norton INS 2008.
