Well, I am getting a CR series soon and need to know whether Norton is a waste of hardware or not (un-biastly). Also, what anti-virus software is the best (preflebly from disc, and not free). Also is there something that can get rid of all the bloatware, but you choose what bloatware to get rid of?

    Thanks

    Jewp

Norton and McAfee are the worst thing that could happen to a system! they're the first thing i uninstall when i restore my laptop.

They take up huuuuge system resources and don't do a very good job at detecting/removing viruses.

    NOD32 is the best!

Just a reminder that he is talking about the regular consumer versions of those. The business, or corporate versions are much better and lighter on resources. I'm using McAfee VirusScan Entreprise and it's great and barely uses any resources (2 processes and 32mb of ram, which is nothing)

OK... but I would be buying in a normal shop. Any suggestion on something I could buy in say PCWORLD (UK version of BestBuy)

I gave up on Norton and McAfee. I had their enterprise and pro versions.
Same problem with CA eTrust business edition. Seriously slowing down boot up and trying to download updates with no internet connection.
And I was still getting viruses, adware and spyware.
Right now I am using Ad Aware 2007 Plus edition, but only to scan my computer weekly. I am running Ad watch 24/7 and looks like it keeps my computer clean.
    Best spent $40.

I have adaware SE, since the 2007 edition wasn't compatible with some computers, especially older computers (causes them to crash).
Also I use Norton Anti Virus. Most of the time the anti-virus is disabled, and I only run it manually if I think there's something wrong with my pc.

Norton doesn't take that many resources, but it is slow, because it's a very advanced anti-virus scanner, with trojan/worm scanning too.

NAV has in several occasions not discovered a virus when there was one. If it wasn't for my firewall I would have gotten rid of Norton the first time a virus was found on my pc.

Adaware SE always has done a great job on my pc! Much better then system mechanic, and then the 2007 version.
I still run the freeware program, it's exclusive adwach, but then I'm usually not going on weird or riskfull websites.

Funny you mentioned it. I had AdAware 6 pro version and I used it since 2002, I think. Up until my TXN15 there was no problem installing and running it. With this laptop I couldn't even install it. I went on Lavasoft website, just to find a fix and end up buying 2007 version. I do highly recommend it. Some stuff gets thru, I don't think there is a perfect protection. I just made a habit to scan the HDD every other month in safe mode. It does work.
Over the last 3-4 years I tried different combination of AdAware and AV software. I noticed that AdAware did all they do plus more and you can't even tell is running.

I've kept the Norton 360 Suite that came pre-installed with my laptop. I'm also considering getting a subscription once the trial finishes.

According to reviews, Norton 360 does not take after other Norton products such as anti-virus and firewall. It uses a clean interface, and from my use, its pretty low on resources. Its smooth searching through menu's and does all PC maintence in quick mulitple scans.

From my knowledge, if you want the best virus scanner is available, then you should be going for Kasperspy.

AVG Free. Been using it for years on multiple systems and it has never let me down. It's virtually unnoticeable with regards to resources and performance, but instantly pops up anytime an infection hits the filesystem.

If anything, it's a bit too sensitive and can be prone to warnings or false positives with certain EXE types (like compressed or encrypted EXE's). But I'd rather dismiss those infrequent warnings that have things slipping through.

I too loathe anything Norton in the consumer product line. At work I am forced to use Symantic Enterprise AV, and yes it is better but it's STILL more of a hog than AVG. I used AVG at work until they made me stop. :(

I had used symantec corporate edition 10.2 once and it had one of the lowest memory utilization. Also it started up faster than AVG free.

Norton antivirus is not a big waste. Actually norton av 2007 was the one which saved my old dell notebook from spysheriff spyware, while rest of the free utilities didn't remove the spyware fully.

Norton removes all the traces of virus/spyware/adware. Norton always is a good security product. But I am using AVG free now. I don't want to pay for an antivirus. And also AVG fails some of the security tests in http://www.eicar.org

Try Norton 2007 or 2008. They are not like old versions. Symantec completely re-desinged their softwares. It is very light, strong, and fast. When it comes to NIS 2008, it is much better than KAV, or NOD32 or any other AV programs.

Just dont get f-secure.. Tried to get BF2 running on my sz yesterday. I could tell instantly it was f-secure (firewall in this case) that didnt let bf2 through even though I had manually added about 10 rules allowing the game to do virtually anything. Still didnt work so I disabled the f-secre fw and put vista fw on and it worked.. I wont be turning the f-secure fw on anymore..

as for anti-virus, I use AVG, and I use Spybot- S&D and Adaware 2007 free for spyware/malware removal/detection.

as for removing bloatware, just uninstall it all through the add/remove programs list, but DONT remove VAIO Event (I made that mistake), its used for all the hotkeys! And dont remove the Sony Libary DLL or Sony Share Video Library!

Other than those things, and the obvious (such as graphics drivers, bluetooth software, and programs you want) you can uninstall the rest!

you can try decrapifier (google it), but it doesn't find a lot of stuff that you might want to remove (well not in my case at least)!

Has anyone bought the holiday deal from Kaspersky? I was wondering how to get those three 2nd year licenses. I am planning to buy it in my local store. Will I get the 2nd year that way?
