My computer is unable to make recovery disk(s). It says I don't have enough hard drive space but my stuff on the SSD is taking up only 50 GB.

Does anyone know what is happening?

    Never mind. I got it.

When you edit where the temp files should go, the system will not create the folders for you. After you reassign the temp folders in the new location (i.e. a new drive\folder name),you also have to create the folder name manually, then restart the laptop. From there, temp files should get redirected.
