What are the advantages of a OLED display? My Samsung P2 uses OLED but I'm not sure what the benefits are.

    Quote from the article:

Besides the improved picture quality, the self-illuminating screen's lack of any need for a backlight also allows for an extremely thin display. A new silicon oxide manufacturing process should also make actual production AMOLED screens much more affordable at similar sizes than earlier AMOLED and regular OLED displays, which are often used for much smaller devices for cost reasons.

Hope these are available on the Calpella or Westmere 13"! :D

OLED displays are AMAZING!!! I saw the 10-inch OLED TV from Sony and the black is pitch black, and colors look almost 3D. And the picture looks the same from ANY angle. It's absolutely jaw-droppingly wonderful.

I don`t see why they wouldn`t. I have a old SONY PEGA-VZ90 Palm OS PDA (480x320 screen) and it still kicks the living daylights out of any other portable media player in terms of screen quality.

The OLED technology can`t be described in pictures or words it has to be seen in person. The contrast, sharpness and colour are amazing.

The only thing maybe holding it back as when the VZ90 when it came out was absurdly expensive due to the OLED screen. OLED standing for Organic Light Emmitting Diode.

I think its slightly different from LED technology and there was some problems with the Blue colour material degrading much quicker than red or green so it possible they might have resolved this problem. Also i think i remember reading about the material also cold be used for flexible transparent screens (Like in minority report)

    Again quote from the article:

''The inherent nature of the technology produces a contrast ratio about "20 times" higher than that of an LCD.''

Immagine a TZ with a screen OLED! :)

Im imagining it right now and have been for a while. Whats the chances of actually seeing these in the next TZ. The XEL-1 OLED TV is in consumer channels since december/january and is 11" although lower resolution than current LED's and high RRP. If the TZ hits in September maybe there is time. Don't laugh, I know its a stupid wish but a man's allowed to dream.

I really don't think its going to happen anytime soon. :(
I'm sure Sony will be one of the first to incorporate it into their notebooks though just like they were the first to use LED backlighting and glossy screens. :)

Doubt OLEDs will be put in soon but when it does happen, I'll be excited. They're definitely the future.

Let's say that I wouldn't be surprised if Sony put OLED in their laptops. If OLED technology is already here and Sony released a OLED TV 11'' why not include it a future ultraportable? I know that the screen of the TZ is already amazing but the OLED is really something else... :)
    My dream TZ:
    OLED
    128 GB SSD
    Centrino 2
    Blu-Ray Drive
    4 GB RAM
    X4500 graphic card
    Blacklit Keyboard

Asking too much? As Jurispundence said no discount in dreaming!

    Maybe one day then...sob :(

I can still can look forward to the world's best ultraportable (again) in the next T series. Come on Sony make us proud. Show Apple how its meant to be done. Make mine a 256GB SSD from Samsung and i'll stop complaining (till I see the next OLED that is). It just means I have to buy the next T and then the one after that. They can keep each other company and defend me against the bank manager.
