I'm sorry if this has been asked many times before. I did a search but can't find any info. I'm interested in getting a VAIO notebook but want to be sure of 1 thing:

    - Does Sony provide Windows Operating System installation/setup disk (CD or DVD)?

    Here's what I already know:
Sony provides recovery partition that keeps an image of factory installed OS + a ton of trialware. They also give us an option to create our own recovery disk. Either way will restore everything including trial software (eeewww...).

I want to have a "lean" notebook (operating system with no trial ware). I don't want a ton of pre-installed bloatware. That's like buying a car with a ton of garbage stuffed inside the car which adds weight to the car and costs us more on gas (not exactly a good comparison :) but that's what I can come up with). We have to take our time to remove the garbage before driving the car.

As far as I know Dell is the only computer maker that provides OS only setup disk (we must request for it and pay minimal fee for shipping in most cases but they do provide OS setup disk). It would be nice to have Sony OS setup disk instead of recovery image. If there's a way to get OS setup disk from Sony, how do we get it?

    Anyone?

That's the problem. Removing unwanted trialware isn't exactly the same as not having them installed in the first place.

It's sad to know that we can't get what we pay for (a notebook with Windows operating systems) without useless bloatware that'll expire anyway. The number of trialware is just ridiculous. A Core 2 duo runs like a Pentium 500MHz with all those trialware kicking in at the same time on boot up.

I give Dell big thumbs up for providing customers with OS only setup disk when requested. Besides Dell, is there any other computer makers that'll provide OS only setup disk?

Thanks to you both for your reply. I'll have a look at the link later.

There is a lot of bloatware, but your assumption about it ALL running at bootup is false. Most of it does not run automatically. There is a toolbar that runs at boot up, there is the Norton AntiVirus that runs at boot time. The Grouper Screensaver MIGHT start at boot, if you enable it. The Travelocity Gadget, and SpySweeper run at boot time. All the rest lie dormant until you start them up. The worst drag in performance of all the boot time interlopers is Norton!

Yeah, my bad, not all run on startup but most. These days most software has some sort of "service" running in the background to check for updates. Btw, I never had a Sony PC/notebook so I don't know what bloatware are preloaded onto the system. But I am sure there are a lot more craps that you forgot to mention (eg: AOL etc).

I've read the link given by ashtanga-warrior. It sounds like the trick involves interrupting Windows unattended (or Sony custom) installation. We just have to know when to interrupt (kill) recovery program at some point before it starts installing bloatware. That won't work if they use ghost image to recover the system. I guess Sony doesn't use ghost image.
