I recently bought a TZ from Conics after hearing about them on this forum.

It came with Vista Home Premium.......and er, basically I'm having quite a lot of problems with it - which has kind of taken the edge off of the whole "new laptop" experience!

Anyway, I'm considering putting XP onto it.

I've already had a quick look at some of the guides available on here, but unfortunately I'm not that computer savvy and as such, a fair bit of it doesn't make immediate sense to me. I'm sure these things become clearer as you start going through it all - but before I potentially ruin something that's cost me quite a bit, I thought I'd get the general consensus:

Is replacing the OS something that I should be attempting without the assistance of someone who really knows what they are doing - as I don't, if I'm honest and I can't afford to render my machine unusable.

    Thanks

    Gavin

As long as you make sure to follow instructions very carefully and don't randomly click things, you should be fine. Just make sure you have the original Vista disk in case something goes wrong with the XP install... I have heard of people having issues installing different OS's into Sony's systems.

Just mucking with the OS will not render your computer dead, just unusable for the time being if something went wrong. If you really mess it up, use the recovery discs you create in Vista to restore it back to factory state. Replacing the OS will not do anything to the hardware of your machine, and somebody with knowledge could always help you get it working again.

    You won't ruin your computer.

As stated above "use the recovery discs you create in Vista to restore" AND important thing not to do when installing another OS: DO NOT DELETE HIDDEN PARTITION within your sony notebook, it's around 10GB for restore using the recovery discs! :p
